Nigerian newspapers: 10 things you need to know this Tuesday morning

1. The abductors of the All Progressives Congress, APC, Chairman for the Akoko-Edo Local Government Area of Edo State, Mr. Henry Ashofor have reportedly demanded a ransom of N20 million for his release. Ashofor and two others were said to have been whisked away by unknown gunmen near Aiyetoro, along the Igarra-Ibilo road, last Saturday.

2. Former Senate President, David Mark, would today, September 4, pick his presidential interest and nomination forms ahead of the 2019 presidential elections. Mark will contest on the platform of the Peoples Democratic Party, PDP.

3. The national leader of the All Progressives Congress, APC, Bola Tinubu, has debunked the report that he was denied entry at the Thursday NEC meeting of the party. Reacting to the report, Tunde Rahman, Tinubu’s media aide said he was only at the party secretariat because he had an appointment with the national chairman. He said some governors protested his presence, thinking he had come to drum up support for the direct primary model.

4. Ahead of the 2019 general elections, the Peoples Democratic Party, PDP, Benue State chapter has officially handed over the party’s structure to the state governor, Samuel Ortom. The party leadership took this decision at an ongoing expanded caucus meeting held in Makurdi on Monday. Making the announcement during the meeting, John Ngbede, State PDP chairman, said Ortom is now the leader of the party in Benue State.

5. The Kano State Stakeholders of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), on Monday, rejected the dissolution of the executive of the party. Addressing party members at the state secretariat along Maiduguri road, on behalf of gubernatorial aspirants, Engr Sarki Labaran said the action of the National Headquarters of the party was illegal and cannot stand. He said the party contradicted itself by the dissolution, noting that the state executive elected members of the National Working Committee and that as such, the NWC should also be dissolved.

6. The Governor of Ebonyi State, Engr. David Umahi on Monday revealed that many looted funds in Nigeria were being kept in foreign banks, cemeteries and undergrounds. He advocated amnesty for looters, saying such approach would help in arresting corruption and make offenders to surrender over 70 per cent of looted public funds.

7. President Muhammadu Buhari has declined assent to the Electoral Act (Amendment) Bill, 2018, transmitted to him by the National Assembly. The Senior Special Assistant to the President on National Assembly Matters (Senate), Sen. Ita Enang, disclosed this in a statement on Monday. He said the President declined assent to the bill due to some drafting issues. According to him, one of the concerns of the President was the period fixed for primaries.

8. The Plateau State Police Command has confirmed that eleven persons were killed Sunday night in Latya and Lakwandet communities, close to Gura Topp in Rayfield Jos South LGA of Plateau State by unknown gunmen. This was according to the spokesman of the Command, DSP Mathias Terna Tyopev.

9. The Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) has urged the National Assembly to immediately override President Muhammadu Buhari’s refusal to assent the Electoral Act 2010 (Amendment) Bill. In a statement by its publicity secretary, Kola Ologbondiyan, the party said that Buhari’s veto did not come as a surprise since his commitment to a free and fair 2019 election was a mere lip service.

10. The Police Command in Enugu State has arrested a school Headmaster, one Idoko Nathaniel, aged 50, of Mkpamteulo village, Enugu Ezike community, Igbo-Eze North Council for allegedly defiling four pupils put under his care. Police spokesman, Ebere Amaraizu, in a statement on Monday, said that the incident happened at Migrant Farmers Children School located at Aguibeji community in Enugu Ezike, Igboeze North Local Government Area.
