Nigerian Newspapers: 10 things you need to know this Tuesday morning

1. President of the Senate, Bukola Saraki, Senator Dino Melaye and Senator Ben Murray-Bruce have dragged the Inspector-General of Police, Ibrahim Idris, to court.

The lawmakers were among the three leaders of the Peoples Democratic Party who led a protest march to the headquarters of the Independent National Electoral Commission and the Force Headquarters in Abuja on Friday to protest against the outcome of the Osun State governorship election.

2. Governor Ayodele Fayose of Ekiti State has threatened to leave the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP).

His threat came as aftermath of the PDP’s National Convention held on Saturday in Port-Harcourt, Rivers State, where former Vice President Atiku Abubakar, emerged the presidential flag bearer of the party.

3. The death has been announced of veteran comedian, Moses Adejumo, popularly known as Baba Sala..

Baba Sala died in Ilesa on Sunday evening and his body has been deposited at the Obafemi Awolowo University Teaching Hospital Complex Annex, (Wesley Guild Hospital) in Ilesa.

4. Suleiman Abba, the former Inspector General of Police, has rained curses on the leadership of the All Progressives Congress (APC).

He laid the curses after he was screened out of contesting for the Jigawa Central Senatorial District seat on the party’s platform.

5. The Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) has urged the Ekiti state Governor, Ayodele Fayose, not to dump the party.

The PDP appealed to him not to take any decision in anger but consider the fact that all those who left the PDP for other parties regretted that they defected.

6. Former Chairman of the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC), Nuhu Ribadu, has said that crisis between farmers and herders have been hijacked by some politicians to score political points.

He said contrary to reports, President Muhammadu Buhari was neutral and takes no side in the conflicts.

7. Staff of the National Health Insurance Scheme, NHIS, have once again demanded for the sack of the Executive Secretary of the scheme, Prof. Usman Yusuf, over alleged acts of corruption, nepotism, and abuse of office.

Speaking, the Vice Chairman of the NHIS chapter of the association, Comrade Isaac Ojemhenke, accused Yusuf of illegal secondment of his nephew’s appointment into the procurement department of the scheme.

8. The All Progressives Congress, APC, has congratulated former Vice President Atiku Abubakar for emerging Peoples Democratic Party, PDP, presidential candidate on Sunday.

The ruling party, however, said that Atiku’s scorecard is abysmally low.

9. Minister of Defence, Mansur Dan-Ali, on Monday inaugurated a “Defence and Security Think-tank” team approved by President Muhammadu Buhari, to “proactively and continuously examine security situation in the country”.

Dan-Ali said the think-tank was also empowered to co-opt any person deemed necessary to contribute positively to its assignment.

10. The Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) has advised political parties and their candidates to adhere to electoral timetable on commencement of election campaigns ahead of the 2019 general elections.

The Chairman of INEC, Prof. Mahmood Yakubu, who gave the advice at the Workshop for election professionals from the Commonwealth Africa Region on Monday in Abuja, reminded political parties and candidates that the end of primaries did not mean the immediate commencement of campaigns.
