Nigerian newspapers: 10 things you need to know this Tuesday morning

Good morning! Here is today’s summary from Nigerian Newspapers:

1. The Deputy Speaker, Yobe State House of Assembly, Dr. Garba Ibrahim Kurmi is dead. He passed on, Monday, following a protracted illness. The lawmaker died at the Yobe State University Teaching Hospital Damaturu, according to sources close to his family.

2. The Independent National Electoral Commission, INEC, has approved the resumption of political campaigns. This was disclosed in a statement signed by Festus Okoye, National Commissioner and Chairman, Information and Voter Education Committee. Okoye said the commission took the decision after reviewing its preparations for the elections, as well as consultations with political parties.

3. Presidential candidate of the People’s Trust, Gbenga Olawepo-Hashim, has written to the chairman of the Independent National Electoral, Prof. Mahmood Yakubu, asking for another postponement of the presidential and National Assembly elections. He said the one-week postponement of the elections earlier scheduled for last Saturday was too short to address the logistics problems the electoral body said were responsible for the last postponement.

4. The Independent National Electoral Commission, INEC, has insisted it made adequate provisions to meet the welfare needs of corps members mobilised for last Saturday’s postponed elections. It said corps members who faced welfare challenges did so because the Resident Electoral Commissioners (RECs) in the states were unsure if the elections would take place as earlier scheduled.

5. The All Progressives Congress, APC, has alleged that about 7,000 Card Readers of the Independent National Electoral Commission, INEC are with the Peoples Democratic Party, PDP. Deputy National Publicity Secretary of APC, Yekini Nabena also alleged that about 80 thousand Permanent Voters Cards, PVCs, are with PDP agents in the South East.

6. The Speaker of the House of Representatives, Yakubu Dogara has accused the presidency and the All Progressives Congress, APC, of plotting to embarrass the Independent National Electoral Commission, INEC, in a bid to remove its chairman, Professor Mahmood Yakubu from office. Dogara, on Monday, rubbished President Buhari and Comrade Adams Oshiomhole’s allegations that the PDP had prior information of plans to shift the polls last week.

7. President Muhammadu Buhari on Monday threatened those who may be involved in ballot box snatching, saying they stand to risk their own lives. The president stated this at the All Progressives Congress (APC) emergency caucus meeting at the party secretariat, Abuja.

8. A Federal High Court sitting in Abuja has stopped the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) from declaring the chairman of defunct Pension Reform Task Team Mr Abdulrasheed Maina, wanted. Justice Guwa Ogunbanjo gave the order on Monday. Justice Ogunbanjo, who gave an order of perpetual injunction against EFCC and its affiliates, also ruled that the action of placing Maina as “wanted” was unlawful, as it was an infringement on his fundamental human rights.

9. The National Leader of the All Progressives Congress (APC), Asiwaju Bola Ahmed Tinubu on Monday refuted the statement credited to President Muhammadu Buhari where he threatened that snatchers of ballot boxes will pay with their lives. Tinubu, speaking with journalists in Abuja at the end of the APC caucus meeting said that the President was misinterpreted. He said that the President at the meeting only reinforced that those involved in ballot box snatching would be risking their lives.

10. The All Progressives Congress, APC, has told the European Union, the United Kingdom and the United States to solve numerous challenges facing them and leave Nigeria to handle her own internal matters. This was coming from the Deputy National Publicity Secretary of the ruling party, Yekini Nabena. According to him, the Western nations should focus on the breakdown of the Brexit deal between the United Kingdom and European Union; the alleged Russia interference in the last presidential election in the US; and many other serious challenges they are facing.
