1. The Supreme Court has made it clear that it does not take orders from President Muhammadu Buhari, as it remained an independent arm of government. The apex court, in a statement signed by the Director, Information and Press, Dr. Festus Akande, also denied reports that six of its directors were behind the exit of former Chief Justice of Nigeria (CJN), Justice Walter Onnoghen.
2. Kidnappers, on Monday afternoon, blocked the Kaduna-Abuja Expressway forcing several motorists to abandon their vehicles and head for nearby bushes to avoid being abducted. The development left many motorists and passengers unaccounted for just as their belongings were carted away by the kidnappers.
3. The Police in Edo State said on Monday in Benin that it had arrested a man alleged to be a cultist and serial killer, who had murdered no less than 38 victims. A statement signed by DSP Chidi Nwabuzor, spokesperson of the Police Command in the state, said that the suspect was arrested last Tuesday following the receipt of credible intelligence. Nwabuzor said that the 37-year-old suspect was on a mission to kill a victim (names withheld) before his arrest.
4. The Senate has directed the Minister of Industry, Trade and Investment, Dr Okechukwu Enelamah and acting Managing Director of Nigeria Export Processing Zones Authority (NEPZA), Engineer Terhemba Nongo to return alleged diverted N14.3 billion from 2017 NEPZA budget into the National Treasury. The upper legislative chamber in a letter written to that effect by Chairman of its Committee on Trade and Investment, Senator Mohammed Nakudu Sabo (APC Jigawa South West), warned the Minister and NEPZA boss to either comply with the directive or be ready to face serious legislative action against them.
5. The Nigeria Immigration Service (NIS) on Monday, commenced issuance of the new 10-year validity enhanced passport booklet, which is part of comprehensive reform, approved by the Federal Government in January. Comptroller-General of the Service, Mr Muhammad Babandede, said this at the ceremony held at the NIS Headquarters, Abuja. The 64-page 10-year standard passport costs N70, 000, while the 32-page five-year standard passport costs N25, 000. The 64-page five-year standard passport goes for N 35,000, while the 32-page five-year official passport costs N15, 000.
6. The Peoples Democratic Party, PDP, Monday, raised the alarm, accusing the Independent National Electoral Commission, INEC, of currently replacing all the servers in its headquarters and offices in all states of the federation and Abuja, the Federal Capital Territory, FCT. It also alleged that the frenzied activity was in a desperate bid to obliterate the actual Presidential election results transmitted from the polling centres across the nation. PDP spokesman, Kola Ologbondiyan disclosed this in a statement made available to newsmen in Abuja.
7. The Zamfara State Governor, Governor Abdulaziz Yari, has warned that another circle of recession will come by mid-2020. Yari further revealed that governors have unanimously agreed that borrowing is not a reliable alternative to solving the country’s economic problems. The governor stated this on Monday at the opening of the three-day retreat for returning governors and governors-elect in Abuja.
8. President Muhammadu Buhari has directed Mr Abubakar Malami, the Attorney-General of the Federation and Minister of Justice to immediately intervene in the case of Zainab Aliyu, the student incriminated in drug-related matters and being detained by Saudi Arabian authorities. Senior Special Assistant to President Buhari on Foreign Affairs and Diaspora matters, Hon. Abike Dabiri-Erewa, made this disclosure in a statement.
9. The Peoples Democratic Party, PDP, Monday carpeted President Muhammadu Buhari’s private voyage out of the country without transmitting power as required by the constitution. It, therefore, accused Buhari and the APC of seeking to vacate the constitutional order and foist an authoritarian system on the country. PDP spokesman, Kola Ologbondiyan said this in a statement made available to newsmen in Abuja.
10. Armed men on Monday kidnapped the Chairman of the Universal Basic Education Commission (UBEC), Muhammad Abubakar and his daughter while his driver was shot dead. The report says the attack occurred at about 3 pm around Katari village. Spokesman of the Kaduna State Police Command, DSP Yakubu Sabo, disclosed this.
