Nigerian Newspapers: 10 things you need to know this Tuesday morning

1. workers in Oyo and Osun states have embarked on an indefinite strike following the non-payment of salaries by the states’ government. Report says labour leaders in both states directed their workers to embark on the action as from Tuesday, following the expiration of the ultimatum given to the government of both states.

2. The Federal Government on Monday reached an agreement with Major Oil Marketers Association of Nigeria (MOMAN) and lifting of petroleum products has commenced for nationwide distribution. This development was disclosed on Monday by the Chairman, Senate Committee on Petroleum Resources, Sen. Magnus Abe at the end of a peace meeting held between the government and the aggrieved oil workers.

3. It appears like a season of strike action as primary and secondary school teachers in Abuja on Monday embarked on an indefinite strike. This follows a directive by the Nigeria Union of Teachers. The union is protesting against some policies adopted by the FCT administration that they have termed obnoxious. Some of the policies include – reinstatement of 27.5 per cent Teacher Salary Structure allowance; non-release of promotion for teachers for years 2012, 2013, 2014 and 2015 and non-payment of 100 per cent rent allowance to teachers.

4. Proceeding on Buruji Kashamu’s extradition was stalled on Monday as the NDLEA failed to bring him to court, claiming Kashamu refused to turn himself in to the anti-narcotic agency. Kashamu’s lawyer has however filed a motion ahead of the case, asking why the NDLEA Chairman, Ahmadu Giade and the Attorney General should not be jailed for contempt of court.

5. One of the commanders of the insurgents Boko Haram group killed during an encounter with the Nigerian Army in Mafa, near Nigeria’s border with Cameroon was discovered to be carrying large amount of foreign currency before he fell to the bullet of the military. This was disclosed by the Army through the Director of Defence Information, Gen. Chris Olukolade.

6. Rivers State Governor-elect, Nyesom Wike has stated that he will probe the Rotimi Amaechi administration after his May 29 inauguration. Wike disclosed this while receiving the interim report of the Transition Committee in Port Harcourt on Monday, threatening that his government would carry out a forensic audit of all government accounts as soon he takes over power on Friday to determine the level of corruption and those involved.

7. A new Board of Trustees, BoT Chairman of the PDP in the person of former Minister of Defence, Dr. Haliru Bello, has emerged. Haliru is to take over on acting capacity. His appointment followed a meeting of the party held inside the Presidential Villa, Abuja on Monday.

8. The Federal Government on Monday presented the handover note prepared by the outgoing Jonathan’s government to the BUhari’s transition committee, saying that it was open to any question that needed their attention. The presentation was done by the Vice President, Namadi Sambo.

9. The Federal Government has explained why there is total blackout across the country , saying that the nation has lost over 2,000 megawatts in the national grid due to shortage of gas supply to the thermal plants. In a statement signed by the Chairman of the National electricity Regulatory Commission, NERC, Dr. Sam Amadi , the government explained that only five of 23 power plants are currently generating electricity.

10. About 100 persons have been reportedly killed in Benue State after gunmen believed to be Fulani herdsmen attacked some villages and refugee camps including Ukura, Gafa, Per and Tse-Gusa in Logo Local Government Area of Benue State. Those killed were mostly women, children and the elderly. The incident happened on Sunday.
