Nigerian Newspapers: 10 things you need to know this Tuesday morning

Good morning! Here are 10 things you need to know this morning:

1. Nigerian Banks have continued to release names of individuals or organizations who are indebted to them. Some of the names published include Sir Emeka Offor’s Global ScanSystem Limited, which currently owes N181m; a former Chairman, House of Representatives Committee on the Diaspora, Mrs. Abike Dabiri-Erewa’s Thriller Eneavours, which owes N122m; and a former Delta State Commissioner for Sports ,Solomon Ogba’s Delta Mega Trend Limited, that owes N89m.

2. The United States has hinted it was considering lifting or relaxing the restriction on military assistance imposed on Nigeria based on the country’s Leahy Law. U.S. congressman, Darrel Issah, disclosed this after a meeting with Nigeria’s service chiefs and Ministry of Defence officials in Abuja on Monday. He said the consideration follows the policy of the new military command and the renewed military operations in the country.

3. President Muhammadu Buhari yesterday told U.S. Congressmen, led by Representative Darrel Issa that banks and countries where Nigerian stolen funds are kept have been identified. The President expressed hope that the US government and other countries will treat Nigeria with sympathy when the country is set to prosecute those involved and move to recover the looted funds.

4. Several churches, Mosques and hotels were on Monday sealed by the Lagos State Environmental Protection Agency over alleged air and noise pollution. One of the hotels sealed was ex-Super Eagles player, Kanu Nwankwo’s Hardley Apartments, on Victoria Island.

5. Former Governor of Rivers State, Rotimi Amaechi, has said his problem with former President, Goodluck Jonathan started after he refused to support the ex-President’s request to secure the support of governors for an upward review of subsidy payments. He alleged that Jonathan insulted the hell out of him after he refused to support the request. Amaechi said this in Abuja, on Sunday night, at a dinner organised in his honour by his friends in Abuja.

6. The Ondo State chapter of the APC have accused the State Governor, Olusegun Mimiko of illegally placing the National Publicity Secretary of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), Mr. Olisa Metuh and some others leaders of the party on the state’s payroll, asking the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) and the police to investigate the alleged financial recklessness of Mimiko.

7. For allegedly awarding NAFDAC contracts to companies he has interest in, the Operatives of the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission on Monday quizzed the Director General of the National Agency for Food and Drug Administration and Control, Dr. Paul Orhii. Orhii arrived the EFCC by 10am and left by 5pm. He is expected to to return to the Commission on Tuesday for further questions (today)

8. The Defence Headquarters has announced the name of its new Director of Information. The Director Information is now Colonel Rabe Abubakar who took over from Major General Chris Olukolade, who is now due for retirement and will leave the Service in September, 2015.

9. It was a situational irony when the founder and leader of Apata Adu­ra Cherubim and Seraphim Church, Ekute, Ado-Ekiti, Ekiti State, former Pastor Adekunle Afolabi got converted to Islam. Afolabi who had practiced Christianity for over 25 years and rose to the position of General Overseer of his church said he has no regrets converting to Islam.

10. The Boko Haram Islamic Sect on Monday released a new video with its leader, Abubakar Shekau, completely absent for the second time in a row. This development has further fueled speculation that the terrorist leader may have been killed in one of the military raids in the North East.
