Nigerian Newspapers: 10 things you need to know this Tuesday morning

Good morning! Here are 10 things you need to know this morning:

1. Report says negotiations are ongoing with a number of countries on how stolen Nigerian funds stashed abroad could be repatriated. According to the Minister of Foreign Affairs, Geoffrey Onyeama, the Federal Government had been in touch with Switzerland, which had earlier repatriated $700m to Nigeria. He noted that another $300m that was recovered would soon be repatriated to the country.

2. The Economic and Financial Crimes Commission, EFCC has explained that former president, Goodluck Jonathan has not been arrested yet because no document has been traced to him on the approval for the disbursement of the money for any purpose apart from the purchase of arms. This was disclosed by the EFCC boss, Mr Ibrahim Magu while speaking with online news publishers yesterday, in Lagos.

3. Following his continuous detention by the EFCC, the National Publicity Secretary of the Peoples Democratic Party, Chief Olisa Metuh, on Monday filed a fundamental rights enforcement suit before a Federal High Court in Lagos, seeking his immediate release from custody. Metuh in the suit alleged that his arrest was targeted at silencing the opposition and to make Nigeria a one-party country.

4. The Presidency has disclosed that the administration of former President, Goodluck Jonathan negotiated with fake leaders of the Boko Haram sect in its effort to secure the release of the over 200 abducted Chibok girls, stating that such was the reason the current government is very calculative when it comes to the issue of Chibok girls. The Special Adviser to the President on Media and Publicity, Mr. Femi Adesina, said this while featuring on a programme aired on Radio Continental 102.3 FM.

5. The Central Bank of Nigeria, CBN, has stopped, with immediate effect, the sale of foreign exchange, forex, to Bureaux de Change, BDCs. This, it said was part of the measures to reduce the pressure on the nation’s foreign reserves. While announcing this in Abuja on Monday,the CBN boss, Mr. Godwin Emefiele, said BDCs are now to source forex from the autonomous market.

6. Founder of Synagogue Church of All Nations, SCOAN, Pastor Temitope Joshua, has been named by a group known as Movement for Progress Initiative as the 13th most famous pastor in the world. This was announced at the ranking event that took place at Egbeda area of Lagos by the Coordinator of the movement, Mr. Opahigbe Lawal.

7. The Board of Inquiry set up by the Nigerian Army to investigate the alleged misconduct of some military personnel during the 2015 elections has recommended the compulsory retirement of two officers. This was contained in a statement issued in Abuja on Monday by the Acting Army Spokesman, Col. Sani Usman.

8. The All Progressives Congress (APC) in Rivers State, has denied having hands in the recent raids by security operatives in the state. Mr Chris Finebone, the state Publicity Secretary of the party, in a statement on Monday said that reports attributing the security raids to the party were untrue and mischievous.

9. A report has claimed that suspected Boko Haram insurgents, Monday morning killed seven persons in Madagali town of Adamawa state. A former administrator of Madagali Local Council, Maina Ularamu said the assailants sneaked into the town and beheaded seven people.

10. A fresh report has claimed that the investigation on the $2.1bn arms procurement scandal by the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission, EFCC, may have been extended to the office of former Vice-President, Namadi Sambo. The report says the extension was because some transactions have been linked the office of the ex-VP.
