Nigerian newspapers: 10 things you need to know this Tuesday morning

Good morning! Here is today’s summary from Nigerian Newspapers:

1. The Chairman/Chief Executive Officer (CEO) of Zenon Oil and Gas Limited, Femi Otedola has told an FCT High Court in Apo that the $620,000 he handed over to former lawmaker, Farouk Lawan, was given to him by the Department of State Security, DSS. The business mogul stated this while being crossed examined by Lawan’s counsel, Mike Ozekhome, SAN. According to Chief Otedola, the alleged bribe money was given to Lawan in a sting operation. He told the court that the DSS, however, did not catch Lawan red-handed at the time of collecting the money from him (Otedola), as shown in a video played in the open court.

2. Ahead of the June 12 Democracy Day celebration, the Federal Road Safety Corps (FRSC) has announced that some roads will be closed in the nation’s capital, Abuja. This was contained in a statement on Monday by Bisi Kazeem, the Corps Public Education Officer. Kazeem disclosed that the Corps Marshal, Dr Boboye Oyeyemi, has directed Commanding Officers across the country to ensure full deployment of personnel and logistics to ensure prompt removal of obstructions and effective traffic management.

3. President Muhammadu Buhari on Monday signed the Public Holiday Amendment bill into law. The Senior Special Assistant to the President on National Assembly matters (Senate), Senator Ita Enang, made the disclosure to newsmen after the signing ceremony. The new law allows public holiday to be declared on June 12. Henceforth, May 29th will no longer be public holiday but handing over date and working day.

4. The Accident Investigation Bureau (AIB) has accused Air Peace of failure to report accidents or serious incidents to the bureau at the exact time the incidents had occurred. The General Manager, Public Affairs, AIB, Mr Tunji Oketunbi, made the disclosure in a statement signed in Lagos on Monday. Oketunbi recalled that on Wednesday, the Bureau received notification from a passenger onboard about a serious incident involving a Boeing 737-300 aircraft with Registration Mark 5N-BUK, belonging to Air Peace.

5. The estranged wife of former governor Sullivan Chime of Enugu State, Clara, on Monday told an FCT High Court Apo, that she left her matrimonial home to save her life. Clara made the allegation while being cross-examined by the counsel to the former governor, Paul Onyia, in the petition filed by Chime for the dissolution of their 11-year-old marriage.

6. Former governor of Imo state, Rochas Okorocha has said that the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) has not issued him his certificate of return as senator-elect less than 24 hours to the inauguration of the ninth National Assembly. In a statement issued to journalists on Monday, Sam Onwuemedo, the ex-governor’s media aide, described pictures circulating on the internet showing the former governor holding a Certificate of Return as fake.

7. An Abuja High Court has granted an interim injunction restraining the Clerk of the National Assembly, the Clerk of the Senate, the Sergeant At Arms to the Senate and others from relying or enforcing the Senate standing orders 2015 (as amended) in the conduct of election of Presiding officers of the Senate of the 9th Assembly, pending the determination of this suit. The court presided over by Justice O.A. Musa, however, ordered the Senate to apply the Senate standing Orders 2011 (as amended) by the Senate on the 24th May, 2011 which prescribed the use of open ballot rather than secret ballot mode in the election of presiding officers of the Senate.

8. British fighter, Anthony Joshua, is now number four in the world heavyweight ranking, as published by Ring Magazine. This comes after he suffered his first defeat as a professional to Andy Ruiz Jr. A seventh-round stoppage at Madison Square Garden, saw Ruiz Jr crowned unified heavyweight champion, the first Mexican-American to achieve the feat. Joshua is now one place behind him.

9. The Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) says it will meet on Tuesday, regarding judgments and orders issued or served on it from various Courts of Law on issuance of Certificates of Return. Mr Festus Okoye, INEC National Commissioner and Chairman, Information and Voter Education Committee, disclosed this while reacting to enquiry on the commission’s decision on the court order.

10. The Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) has finally declared that Senator Ali Ndume (Borno State) and Hon. Umar Bago (Niger State) are its preferred candidates for the leadership of the 9th National Assembly. This decision was reached after extensive consultations with critical stakeholders on Tuesday. The final resolution was communicated in a statement issued at 1:30am on Tuesday by its National Secretary, Senator Umar Ibrahim Tsauri.
