1. President Muhammadu Buhari has approved the termination of appointment of the Current Executive Secretary, Prof. Usman Yusuf and has approved the appointment of Prof. Mohammed Nasir Sambo as the new Executive Secretary. This was made known in a statement on Monday night by Mrs. Boade Akinola, the Director of Press and Public Relations, Federal Ministry of Health.
2. The ruling All Progressives Congress, APC, has finally settled for Alhassan Doguwa as its Majority Leader in the House of Representatives. Doguwa represents Doguwa/Tudun Wada Federal Constituency of Kano State. The lawmaker was the Chief Whip of the House of Representatives in the 8th Assembly.
3. Several persons were on Monday burnt beyond recognition and many vehicles destroyed in a tanker explosion that occurred in Benue State. The incident happened along Ahumbe-Makurdi road. Report said the petroleum-laden tanker fell and spilled its content on the road. However, some villagers, who had arrived the scene to scoop the product got more than they bargained as the tanker went up in flames.
4. The organised labour have alerted Nigerians that plans were underway to embark on industrial action if the current state of affairs as regards the issue of consequential adjustment arising from the new national Minimum wage of N30,000 per month remains the same. In a press statement in Abuja on Monday, the TUS Acting Chairman, Mr Anchaver Simon, and the Secretary, Mr Alade Lawal, expressed disappointment by government’s effort to derail the implementation of a new National Minimum Wage.
5. The Super Eagles missed out on a massive payday, following their shock 2-0 defeat to Madagascar, in their final Group B fixture at the Africa Cup of Nations. Report says the Nigeria Football Federation (NFF) top officials handed $450,000 (N162m) to the team’s secretary, Dayo Enebi, before the game to take care of bonus payouts. After the team lost and failed to fulfil their own part of the bargain, the money has clearly been returned to the NFF, pending when Nigeria take to pitch on July 7 for their Round of 16 fixture.
6. The Peoples Democratic Party, PDP, on Monday disclosed that it has over 400 witnesses willing to testify at the presidential election petition tribunal. PDP’s lead counsel, Levi Uzeugwu made this disclosure while responding to a question by the tribunal chairman, Mohammed Garba.
7. Former First Lady, Patience Jonathan, has been ordered to forfeit the sum of $8.4 million and N9.2 billion to the Federal Government. The order was given by Justice Mojisola Olatoregun of the Federal High Court in Lagos on Monday who held that the money is reasonably suspected to be proceeds of crime. The court granted an application by the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) that the money should be permanently forfeited.
8. An Abuja division of the Federal High Court on Monday issued a bench warrant against the President of the Nigeria Football Federation, NFF, Amaju Pinnick. The court also ordered the arrest of four other officials of the NFF accused of misappropriating funds belonging to the football body. The presiding judge, Justice Ijeoma Ojukwu gave the order after the case involving the NFF officials was called and they were absent in court.
9. Pastor Biodun Fatoyinbo, Monday stepped down as the senior pastor of Commonwealth of Zion Assembly, COZA, over alleged rape allegation by Timi Dakolo’s wife, Busola. Pastor Fatoyinbo, in a post on his Instagram page on Monday, announced that he was embarking on a leave of absence from the pulpit following the nationwide outcry regarding the rape allegation against him.
10. The Organisation of the Petroleum Exporting Countries (OPEC) in Vienna on Monday re-elected Nigeria’s Mohammed Barkindo as Secretary-General for a three-year tenure. The oil bloc also approved a nine-month extension for the global oil cut. Barkindo, born 20 April 1959 in Yola, was first appointed August 1 2016. He previously served as OPEC Acting Secretary General in 2006. He represented Nigeria on OPEC’s Economic Commission Board from 1993 till 2008.
