1. Constitutional lawyers and human rights activists from various parts of the country, Monday, staged a protest in Abuja against the continued detention of former National Security Adviser (NSA), Mohammed Sambo Dasuki (rtd) and others in spite the court bails granted them. The legal practitioners, also claimed that the unconstitutional ways some judges in the country were arrested was a threat to democracy. They appealed to the United Nations, United Kingdom, United States of America and the Amnesty International to call the Federal Government to order in order to stop derailing the rule of law.
2. On a sad note, some heavily armed Fulani herdsmen on Monday invaded Gbada community in Kaure, Shiroro Local Government Area of Niger State, killig five persons in the process. Report says the attack was carried out at about 3 a.m, leaving several villagers injured while others are still missing.
3. President Buhari on Monday ordered full investigation into the alleged exploitation of women and girls in IDPs camps as contained in the HRW report. The President’s order was contained in a statement by his Senior Special Assistant on Media and Publicity, Garba Shehu. He said the outcome of the investigation will determine his next line of action.
4. Vice-President, Yemi Osinbajo said on Monday that former President, Goodluck Jonathan, was never committed to ending the Boko Haram insurgency during his tenure. While speaking at a lecture titled, “The unraveling of Boko Haram and the rebuilding of the North-East of Nigeria” which he delivered at the Harvard University’s Weatherland Centre for International Affairs, United States, he said the government of Jonathan only believed the Boko Haram insurgents were sponsored by the North and the APC against the then government.
5. Report has it that gunmen on Sunday night stormed Kong community in Khana Local Government Area of Rivers State and beheaded two persons. The report says the gunmen had shot into the air intermittently in order to scare people away. It was further reported that the gunmen were cult members who were in search of their perceived rivals.
6. Another report has claimed an internal squabble in the Nigeria Police Force, NPF, over recent transfers and postings across the country, as some aggrieved policemen have accused the Inspector-General of Police, IGP, Ibrahim Idris, of witch-hunting, tribalism and favouritism.
7. The Senate through its committee on Customs, Excise and Tariff has uncovered how automobile giant, Volkswagen Nigeria Limited has been importing its brand of vehicles rather than assembling them in Nigeria. This was revealed during the committee’s oversight visit to Lagos and Ogun States Commands of the Nigerian Customs Service. The committee said it also discovered over 1000 uncleared containers in Ikorodu owned by Delta and Jigawa states government, which have been at the Customs Service and Nigeria Port Authority’s custody for the past 10 years.
8. The Ogun State government has reportedly dismissed the state chairman of the Nigeria Labour Congress (NLC), Comrade Akeem Ambali, his vice and the state chairman of the Nigerian Union of Teachers (NUT), Comrade Dare Ilekoya and 14 others. Also reportedly suspended were 19 officials of the union hacked for alleged misconduct during the recently celebrated teachers day. Report says the NUT leadership was being punished by the government for allegedly inviting some politicians to their teachers day programme.
9. The Independent National Electoral Commission has said that all its officials, who are undergoing investigations for alleged bribery, will not be assigned any electoral duty until investigations are completed. The officials were those whose names were on the list sent to the commission by the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission.
10. The governorship candidate of the All Progressives Congress in Ondo State, Chief Rotimi Akeredolu (SAN), on Monday boasted that even if the two factional candidates of the Peoples Democratic Party, Jimoh Ibrahim and Eyitayo Jegede, join forces to contested against him, he would still defeat them. Akeredolu was speaking in an interview with State House correspondents shortly after he met with the President at the Presidential Villa, Abuja.
