1. Report says the Inspector-General of Police, Ibrahim Idris, has directed operatives of the Special Investigation Panel to carry out a comprehensive probe of the death of three corps members who died recently while in camp. The panel headed by a retired Assistant Inspector-General of Police, Ali Amodu, has reportedly contacted a renowned pathologist, Dr. Wilson Akhiwu, to assist in the investigations.
2. Oil prices, Monday, shot up by over 4.5 per cent to hit $57.89 per barrel, the highest it had gotten to since July 2015. The renewed price rise came after Organization of Petroleum Exporting Countries, OPEC, and other producers in Vienna reached first output cut deal over the weekend.
3. The Senator Ahmed Makarfi-led Peoples Democratic Party has condemned the Saturday’s rerun elections in Rivers State, saying it was a rape of democracy. Party also alleged that it contested against many government institutions during the polls. The institutions it listed as its rival in the election include the Nigerian Army, the Independent National Electoral Commission and the All Progressives Congress. This was disclosed by the Spokesperson for the party, Dayo Adeyeye on Monday.
4. The Chief of Army Staff, Lt. Gen. Tukur Buratai, on Monday said the fight against insurgency in the north east would be over in 2017, and that troops fighting the insurgents would return to the barracks in 2017. He said the success would ensure the total return of IDPs to their homes.
5. Even as controversy continues to trail the the official casualties’ figure in the Saturday’s collapsed Reigners Bible Church building in Uyo, police says death toll has risen to 29. This is according to the state Police Commissioner, Mr Murtala Mani.
6. The Presidency on Monday denied reports in the media that President Muhammadu Buhari has approved the replacement of the Chief of Defence Staff, Gen. Gabriel Olonisakin; and the Chief of Naval Staff, Vice Admiral Ibok-Ete Ekwe Ibas, as service chiefs. According to the Special Adviser to the President on Media and Publicity, Mr. Femi Adesina, the report was false. He said rather than rush to print to publish an unsubstantiated story, the newspaper would have done better to confirm the information at its disposal from many available military and government information channels.
7. Real Madrid top man, Cristiano Ronaldo has been awarded the 2016 Ballon D’Or prize. The player defeated rival Lionel Messi and Antoine Griezmann, to claim his fourth Ballon D’Or.
8. Former House of Representatives member, Alhaji Ahmed Wadada, has decamped from the Peoples Democratic Party, PDP, to the All Progressives Congress, APC. Wadada, who represented Kokona/Keffi/Karu Federal Constituency in Nasarawa State between 2003 to 2011, was welcomed into the fold of the APC on Monday by the APC Chairman of his Tudun Kofa ward, Tanko Sodangi, in Keffi town, Keffi Local Government area of the state.
9. The Economic and Financial Crimes Commission has begun investigation of the acting Vice-Chancellor of the Obafemi Awolowo University, Ile-Ife, Prof. Anthony Elujoba, and the institution’s Bursar, Mrs. Aderonke Akeredolu, over the payment of an ‘unapproved’ hazard allowances to workers. Report says the allowances paid to the academic and non-academic staff were over N1bn.
10. Governor Wike has expressed his anger for security agencies in the state after leading a victory march across the state for PDP’s victory in both the Rivers East and West senatorial districts seats. He said that since the security agencies whom he pays have decided to turn against them, he has equally decided to stop paying them, directing them to the Niger Delta Development Commission, NDDC, for their subsequent payments.
