Nigerian Newspapers: 10 things you need to know this Tuesday morning

Good morning! Here is today’s summary from Nigerian newspapers:

1. A Federal High Court in Abuja on Monday ordered the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission to unseal and vacate some properties linked to the Ekiti State Governor, Ayodele Fayose. Justice Dimgba, made the order based on a fresh order by Justice Okon Abang of the same Abuja Division of the Federal High Court, on November 3, 2016.

2. Aviation unions under the umbrella of the National Union of Air Transport Employees, NUATE, Air Transport Senior Staff Services Association of Nigeria, ATSSSAN, National Association of Aircraft Pilots and Engineers, NAAPE, have now shut down the flight operations of Arik Air over continuous labour disagreement. The unions said the airline will remain shut down until the management allows total unionisation of its employees in compliance with extant labour laws. The unions are equally demanding the recall of sacked staff and payment of 7 months unpaid salaries to its staff.

3. acting Chief Justice of Nigeria, Justice Walter Onnoghen, has said that the appointment of 21 Justices prescribed by the constitution is not the solution to the problem of delayed cases facing the judiciary. Onnoghen, said this while inaugurating the newly refurbished building of the Lagos Division of the Court of Appeal on Lagos Island. He said that the solution to the issue of delayed cases is the regulation of cases that get to the Court of appeal and the supreme court and not in appointment of judges and creation of more divisions in the court.

4. Members of the Indigenous People of Biafra, IPOB, have claimed that President Muhammadu Buhari will be visiting Enugu state on December 22, 2016, and have threatened to die with the President should he step his foot on Enugu or any part of the area. Describing Buhari as “the killer of Biafrans,” they alleged that he has killed over two thousand unarmed and peaceful Biafrans since June 17, 2015, stressing that the President is not allowed into any part of Biafraland until all those detained are released, and Amnesty International report investigated.

5. A chieftain of the All Progressive Congress, APC, Alhaji Isa Ciroma, has debunked governor Nasir El-Rufai’s claim that the wanton killings and destruction of lives and property in Southern Kaduna is connected to the 2011 post election violence. Ciroma who said the governor was talking too much and not doing anything, denied the claim while fielding questions from journalists in Kafanchan, stressing that the killings in Southern Kaduna had nothing to do with the 2011 post election violence that was fought in many parts of Northern Nigeria.

6. The Chairman of the National Caretaker Committee of the Peoples Democratic Party, Ahmed Makarfi, has asked the faction of the party led by Ali Modu Sheriff to mention governors behind it as claimed. According to Makarfi, there was no iota of truth in the claim by the faction that at least eight governors were supporting it.

7. Two suspected female suicide bombers were Sunday killed in a failed attack in Maiduguri, the Borno State capital. The planned attack was thwarted at about 8:30 pm at a checkpoint in Geleri village, five kilometres to Muna Garage, a satellite settlement in Maiduguri close to Dikwa/Gamboru road. A statement issued by the Police Public Relations Officer, DSP, Victor Isuku confirmed the incident.

8. Players and officials of the national U-20 team that were ousted from next year’s Africa Youth Championship have cried out over unpaid bonuses due to them. The team that was stopped by Sudan on a 4-3 aggregate score after losing 3-2 at home in the final leg of qualifiers said they were hoping to get their allowances but never heard anything from the authorities till now.

9. The Federal Government has announced that March 31, 2017 has been fixed for the commencement of registration of vehicles imported into the country under the Vehicle Identification Number scheme. The Minister of Finance, Mrs. Kemi Adeosun, while speaking at the opening of a workshop on the integration of the National Vehicle Identification System held at the Customs Command and Staff College, Gwagwalada, Abuja on Monday, said the initiative was to counter the activities of smugglers and boost revenue generation.

10. The Nigeria Union of Petroleum and Natural Gas Workers, NUPENG, has declared that it will commence a three-day warning strike on January 9, 2017 against an alleged anti-labour practice of International Oil Companies. This was disclosed by the South-West chairman of the union, Alhaji Tokunbo Korodo, when he spoke to newsmen in Lagos, adding that the warning strike was inevitable as all other options had failed.
