Good morning! Here is today’s summary from Nigerian Newspapers:
1. Following the takeover of the Sambisa Forest by the Nigerian Army, over 3,000 residents have returned to Damasak town. The reopening of Maiduguri – Gubio – Damasak road by the Governor of Borno State, Honorable Kashim Shettima on Sunday, 25 December 2016 also contributed chiefly to their return. Most of the returnees had been earlier displaced by serial attacks on their communities by Boko Haram insurgents to Niger Republic and Maiduguri where they had earlier taken refuge.
2. The presidency yesterday said President Muhammadu Buhari, at no time, declared that successes recorded by the Nigerian Military against Boko Haram have ended the war. Media Adviser to the president, Femi Adesina, said his principal was misinterpreted by the media. The aide noted that President Buhari only commended the military when they took over the Sambia Forest in Borno State.
3. Former Aviation Minister, Femi Fani-Kayode, alleged Monday evening that the claim by the Nigerian government that Boko Haram had fallen was a lie. FFK said with the conversation he had with a retired General who shared the perspective with him, it has been revealed that the recent noise about defeat of BHT was deceptive. He said the mission was to further establish the belief & propaganda to achieve 2 things. One of it is to vindicate Islam by presenting it as not being responsible for all the evil done by the Jihadists movement.
4. The Chief of Army Staff, Tukur Buratai, on Monday disclosed that Sambisa forest would now serve as training ground for officers of the Nigerian Army as from next year. Buratai made the revelation in Damasak, Borno, while celebrating Christmas with troops of 145 Battalion after the road leading to the town was reopened by Governor Kashim Shettima.
5. The immediate past Inspector-General of Police, Mr. Solomon Arase, has advised his successor, Mr. Ibrahim Idris, to avoid engaging in acts that could bring any past occupant of that office to public ridicule, revealing that even though he knew that the last two IGs before him each went away with 13 and nine police vehicles respectively when leaving office, he did not try to ridicule them.
6. The Christmas celebration turned sour in the Ikorodu area of Lagos State where a housewife, Christiana Odo, allegedly killed her husband, Rominus, for failing to provide money for the family during the celebration. The incident happened at the couple’s home on London Barber Street, Majidun.
7. Chairman of the senate committee on the Judiciary, Senator David Umaru, has disclosed that the issue of Alhaji Ibrahim Magu’s confirmation as the substantive Chairman of the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission, EFCC, has not been discussed at plenary. Umaru said if that is the case, then Magu’s nomination was never rejected in the first place.
8. Gunmen suspected to be members of cult groups during the weekend killed eight people in Omoku Town in Ogba/Egbema/Ndoni Local Government Area of Rivers State. Report says the heavily armed men stormed the community at about 9pm and shot repeatedly, scaring many away in the process.
9. Suspended member of the House of Representatives, Mr. Abdulmumin Jibrin, has chided President Muhammadu Buhari over the alleged hijack of his government, saying that he has been taken into hostage by some people. He advised Buhari in a series of tweets to either fight those blackmailing him or give up the Presidency.
10. The presidency has said that President Muhammadu Buhari has not spoken yet on the Kaduna killings since Governor of the State, El-Rufai remains on top of the situation. Speaking on the matter in a television programme, presidential aide, Femi Adesina, said as the chief security officer of his state, it’s el-Rufai’s responsibility to bring the perpetrators to book.
