1. Report says former Transition Committee Chairman of Ughelli North Local Government Council, Chief Friday Akpoyibo was Monday kidnapped by suspected fulani herdsmen. He was abducted along the Auchi-Abuja road in Edo State.It was gathered that Akpoyibo was travelling to Abuja for an assignemnt when he was kidnapped by suspected Fulani herdsmen on Sunday.
2. Activities were on Monday grounded at the Enugu Electricity Distribution Company, EEDC, as angry workers staged a protest over massive sack of workers. The workers, who marched angrily along the streets of Enugu metropolis, comprised the United Labour Congress, ULC, Trade Union Congress, TUC, National Union of Electricity Employees, NUEE and Senior Staff Association of Electricity and Allied Companies, SSAEAC.
3. Nigeria Customs Service, NCS, has terminated the appointment of about 48 senior officers in the service. Ag. Comptroller in charge of Discipline, Ganiyu I. A. A made this known in a circular addressed to all Zones, all Customs Area Command and units. 45 officers were dismissed, 11 retired while the appointments of three were outrightly terminated. The officers were fired for professional misconduct.
4. The House of Representatives on Monday, criticized the current pricing system of premium motor spirit, PMS, by the Petroleum Products Price Regulatory Agency (PPPRA), describing it as “fraudulent”. The lawmakers insisted that Nigerians should not buy petrol for more than N70 per litre. They put up this arguments when an ad hoc committee of the House on the Review of Pump Price of Petrol, opened a public hearing at the National Assembly in Abuja.
5. Nigerian government on Monday announced that it has mapped out strategies to end the current economic recession. Minister of Budget and National Planning, Senator Udoma Udoma, made the disclosure at the Presidential Villa in Abuja. Udoma said the medium term Economic Recovery and Growth Plan (ERGP 2017-2020) was being finalized to address current economic challenges, restore growth, and reposition the economy for sustained inclusive growth.
6. The management of Ladoke Akintola University of Technology (LAUTECH), Ogbomoso, has announced that the institution will resume on Friday. A statement posted on its website Monday night and signed by the Registrar, J. A. Agboola, said the University will reopen for normal activities on Friday, January 27, 2017.”
7. Newly-sworn in Gambian President, Adama Barrow has picked a former minister under his predecessor, Yahya Jammeh as vice-president. Fatoumata Jallow-Tambajang is believed to be one the persons who fought for a merger between opposition parties that produced Barrow as its candidate.
8. Nigerian Government has urged the Bring Back Our Girls Group, BBOG, to see teh current government as partner in progress rather than an adversary. In a statement in Abuja on Monday, the Minister of Information and Culture, Alhaji Lai Mohammed, said the BBOG’s continued representation of the government as an adversary and the continuous attacks on the President, who is doing his utmost best to bring the girls back home safely, are ultimately counterproductive.
9. President Muhammadu Buhari has written to the Senate, insisting on the confirmation of the Acting Chairman of the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission, Mr. Ibrahim Magu. Buhari was responding to the position of the Senate that Magu’s appointment will not be confirmed following a damning security report o him by the Department of State Services.
10. Leader of the Indigenous People of Biafra (IPOB) Nnamdi Kanu has threatened to drag the President Muhammadu Buhari-led government to the United Nations (UN) and International Criminal Court (ICC). His lawyer, Ifeanyi Ejiofor, said Kanu will go to any legal length to get justice over his incarceration.
