Nigerian Newspapers: 10 things you need to know this Tuesday morning

Good morning! Here is today’s summary from Nigerian Newspapers

1. Apostle Johnson Suleman of Omega Fire Ministry, Monday, honoured the invitation extended to him by the Department of State Services, DSS. Suleman, who was accompanied to the DSS office by some serving governors, arrived the place by 8pm and was freed after three hours of interrogation.

2. Acting President of Nigeria, Prof. Yemi Osinbajo, Monday held a meeting with the Speaker of the House of Representatives, Yakubu Dogara and the Senate Leader, Ahmed Lawan, at the Presidential Villa in Abuja.

According to Lawan, the 2017 Appropriation Bill was the major topic discussed during the meeting.

3. Leader of the Islamic Movement in Nigeria (IMN), Ibrahim El-Zakzaky has filed a notice of contempt proceedings against the Inspector General of Police (IGP) over the disobedience of a court order for his release.

The proceeding filed on his behalf by human rights lawyer, Femi Falana (SAN) also joined the Attorney General of the Federation (AGF) and the Director General of Department of State Services (DSS) as parties.

4. The Katsina State Chapter of the All Progressives Congress, APC, has accused some desperate oppositions of being behind the death rumour of President Muhammadu Buhari. The state chapter of the party described the rumour as a “pointer to the desperation that has overcome the opposition leaders in Nigeria.”

5. Pandemonium broke out on Monday on Mojeed Sanni Street, in the Igando area of Lagos State, after a 40-year-old Hausa trader, Ibrahim Adamu, allegedly killed a bus driver, Lekan Adeleke.

The incident sparked violence as some residents and friends of the victim made a bonfire on the road as they chased away Hausa traders in the community, threatening to avenge the killing.

6. Governor Rochas Okorocha of Imo State has asked his Igbo kinsmen to forget about presidency in 2019.

Okorocha, who spoke after a meeting with the Acting President, Yemi Osinbajo, noted that the idea of Igbo man ruling the country could only come up at the end of the administration of President Muhammadu Buhari in 2023.

7. The Senator representing Ogun East Senatorial District, Kashamu Buruji, has vowed that any attempt to arrest him would lead to loss of lives in Nigeria.

According to the lawmaker, the moves to extradite him back to the US was illegal, stressing that the President Muhammadu Buhari-led Federal Government would not oblige the request by the US Government for his extradition.

8. The Movement for Actualization of Sovereign State of Biafra, MASSOB, Monday described some politicians from South-East who recently defected to the All Progressives Congress, APC, as “real enemies of Biafra.”

The group’s National Director for Publicity, Samuel Edeson, in a statement in Enugu, said MASSOB aligns with the position of Deputy Senate President, Ike Ekweremadu, who accused the defectors of selfish pursuit, adding that the defectors have no political value in Igboland.

9. The Theatre Commander of Operation Lafiya Dole, Borno State, Maj. Gen. Lucky Irabor, has confirmed that some of his troops were ambushed by Boko Haram insurgents in the Damboa area, during which a civilian was shot dead and two others critically injured. Irabor said the Boko Haram members escaped into a bush after the ambush.

10. On a sad note, Unkown gunmen have shot dead Ben Onyechere, the former Media Adviser to former Governor of Abia State, Chief Theodore Orji.

Onyechere was kidnapped at about 8pm on Saturday in Ikenegbu axis of Owerri where he had gone with his driver to do some shopping before he was killed.
