Nigerian newspapers: 10 things you need to know this Tuesday morning

Good morning! Here is today’s summary from Nigerian Newspapers:

1. The National Chairman of the Peoples Democratic Party, Senator Ali Modu Sheriff, Monday, met with former President, Goodluck Jonathan at his Abuja residence. The meeting, which held behind closed doors, was also attended by Sheriff’s Deputy National Chairman, Dr. Cairo Ojougboh; Acting National Publicity Secretary, Mr. Bernard Mikko; and the National Youth Leader, Mr. Demis Alonge-Niyi.

2. Relatively, the sacked National Caretaker Committee of the PDP led by Ahmed Makarfi said it had appealed the Court of Appeal judgment which removed it from office. The committee, stated this after the faction’s stakeholders’ meeting at Ayodele Fayose’s residence in Abuja.

3. The Federal Government has called on South Africa to stop henceforth the xenophobic attacks on Nigerians and bring those behind the attacks to book. The government has consequently summoned the South African High Commissioner to Nigeria, Ambassador Lulu Mnguni, to explain why Nigerians are being attacked in Pretoria and other communities.

4. The Central Bank of Nigeria, CBN, has released some amendments to the current foreign exchange policy. In a statement on Monday by its Acting Director of Corporate Communications, Isaac Okorafor, the CBN listed major areas it intends to make changes. They include the sale of foreign exchange by Deposit Merchant Banks at international airports to travelers, provision of travel allowances for personal and business purposes and for school and medical purposes.

5. About 21 people have been reportedly killed in two different attacks in Kaura and Jema’a local government areas of Kaduna state. Report says an attack carried out by suspected Fulani herdsmen at Mifi and Ashim towns in Attakar Chiefdom of Kaura local government area resulted to the killing of 14 local farmers. It was reported that the attack occurred around 6am on Monday. Other attacks occurred in different areas of the State resulting to the killing of other 7 other persons.

6. A report has it that gunmen suspected to be militants terrorising Lagos residents, Monday, abduction a military personnel at Ijedodo area of Abule-Ado, Lagos. The report claims that the identity of the abducted personnel, a Lieutenant, could not be known when the report was being filed.

7. At least, six million residents of Rivers State may develop cancer of the lung and other respiratory problems, following the continuous raining of cancerous hydrocarbon elements, commonly referred to as black soot on their environment. Dr. Furo Green, a specialist and consultant surgeon at the Braithwaite Memorial Specialist Hospital, Port Harcourt, raised the alarm on the hazard that comes with the black soot.

8. The Enugu State Board of Internal Revenue has sealed eight banks in the state for failing to remit about 1billion naira tax to the government. The banks affected were Access Bank PLC, Stanbic IBTC Bank, Skye Bank, Union Bank, Unity Bank, Heritage Bank, Keystone Bank and Sterling Bank.

9. The Federal Government has further intensified effort to appease the restive Niger Delta region in order to stabilise oil production in the region. President Muhammadu Buhari has consequently ordered the immediate return of the golden sword seized by the Nigerian Army last year when they were searching for Tompolo, back to Gbaramatu Kingdom in Warri South Local Government of Delta State.

10. Nigeria Police, Monday, sealed off the International Conference Centre, ICC, Abuja, Venue of the Peoples Democratic Party, PDP Stakeholders meeting summoned by the sacked National Caretaker Chairman of the party, Senator Ahmed Makarfi. Makarfi and the governors of the party who were to meet at the venue to decide their next line of action following their defeat by Sen. Ali Modu Sheriff at the Court of Appeal made their ways to the Asokoro residence of the Ekiti State Governor, Ayodele Fayose where the meeting took place.
