Nigerian Newspapers: 10 things you need to know this Tuesday morning

Good morning! Here is today’s summary from Nigerian Newspapers

1. Minister of Information and Culture, Alhaji Lai Mohammed has stated that President Muhammadu Buhari is neither critically ill nor in the hospital as widely believed.

Mohammed also said ‎Bubari is not experiencing life threatening situation as being speculated by some section of Nigerians, stressing that after speaking with the President last week, there was no cause for alarm.

2. The Federal Government has confirmed the appointment of five new directors and one General Manager for the Nigerian Civil Aviation Authority (NCAA).

They are – Group Captain Edem Oyo-Ita (Director of Air Transport Regulations), Ahmed Abbas Sanusi (Director of Human Resources and Administration), Bilikisu Adamu Sani (Director of Finance and Accounts), while Odunowo Tayyib Adetunji was appointed Director of Aerodrome and Airspace Standards.

3. A Federal High Court sitting in Uyo, Akwa Ibom State, has sacked the Senator representing Akwa-Ibom North East district, Albert Bassey Akpan.

The court in a judgment delivered on Monday, asked the INEC to issue a fresh Certificate of Return to Hon. Bassey Etim, whom it established, as the authentic candidate of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) in the December 2014 primary election.

4. The Senator representing Kaduna Central, Shehu Sani has described majority of President Muhammadu Buhari’s cabinet members as “vultures and hyenas” for refusing to declare their assets publicly.

Sani, a chieftain of the All Progressives Congress noted that the refusal of the President’s cabinet members to make their assets known publicly was an indication that they do not believe in the current anti-graft war.

5. The Federal High Court in Lagos has trashed a suit by the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) and its member Mutiu Okunola challenging James Faleke’s nomination as the All Progressives Congress (APC) Deputy Governorship candidate in Kogi State.

Ruling on the case, Justice Abdulazeez Anka held that the intention of the draftsmen as it relates to Section 37 of the Electoral Act 2010 (as amended) is to the effect that double nomination is as regards one candidate being nominated to contest an election under two different political parties.

6. Nigerian currency, the Naira on Monday continued to put up a good fight against the dollar and other major currencies as it gained N10 to exchange at N450 to a dollar at the parallel market, while the Pound Sterling and the Euro exchanged at N560 and N470.

At the Bureau De Change (BDC) window, the Naira was sold at N399 to a dollar, CBN controlled rate, while the Pound Sterling and the Euro closed at N610 and N500 .

7. The Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) has revealed that it was investigating former Attorney General of the Federation (AGF) and Justice Minister, Mohammed Adoke (SAN) and a former Finance Minister for $1.2billion alleged fraud.

The anti-graft agency stated that Adoke was currently being investigated along with “the Finance Minister for fraudulently using Federal Government’s excrow account to receive the bribe money paid by the applicants to Malabu Oil and Gas Ltd.”

8. Former President Shehu Shagari has described President Muhammadu Buhari as a patriotic, honest, incorruptible and detribalised leader.

Shagari said the President was doggedly fighting corruption to sanitise governance in the country and therefore, needed the prayers and support of all Nigerians.

9. Erstwhile President Olusegun Obasanjo has affirmed that God was not behind the many problems currently confronting Nigeria.

Obasanjo, who attributed the country’s problem to failure of leaders, urged Nigerians to stop blaming God for the nation’s woes.

10. The Peoples Democratic Party, PDP, in Rivers State has claimed that the police were planning to frame up its spokesman, Samuel Nwonosike.

The Rivers PDP, which also claimed that Nwonosike and other PDP members who were arrested during the elections on Saturday were to be transferred to Abuja, insisted that the members were innocent and should be released without delay.
