1. The suspended Director-General of the National Intelligence Agency, Amb. Ayo Oke, on Monday appeared before a committee set up by President Muhammadu Buhari to investigate him and the suspended Secretary to the Government of the Federation, Babachir Lawal. Oke’s appearance on Monday is believed to be aimed at giving him the opportunity to answer some questions arising from Magu’s submission to the panel.
2. Nigerian government on Monday said the number of days required for registration of new businesses in Nigeria has been reduced from 10 to 2 in line with the reform agenda of Buhari-led administration. Prospective business owners can now search on Corporate Affairs Commission (CAC) portal (www.cac.gov.ng) to avoid duplication of names and prevent selection of prohibited names. It was also disclosed that company registration no longer requires lawyers as it is now optional for SMEs to hire lawyers to prepare registration documents.
3. The naira on Monday stabilised against the dollar at the parallel market. The currency traded between N380 (buying rate) to N385 (selling rate) on Monday afternoon, maintaining the same rate as of Friday. The naira also closed at N495 to pound sterling and N415 to Euro at the same segment.
4. The Abuja Division of the Federal High Court, on Monday, refused to annul a portion of the Administration of Criminal Justice Act, ACJA, 2015, that requires a defendant to deposit money for bail. The court, in a judgment that was delivered by Justice Gabriel Kolawole, dismissed the suit which was filed by an Abuja based lawyer and former Commissioner for Information in Abia State, Dr. A.C.B. Agbazuere.
5. The Indigenous People of Biafra IPOB has thanked the Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu for openly recognizing Biafra. This follows the Prime Minister’s speech on Holocaust Remembrance Day in Jerusalem, where he mentioned Biafra as a sad case in history where the world turned a blind eye to the orchestrated murder of millions of innocent civilians. Reacting to Netanyahu’s comment, IPOB’s publicity secretary, Emmanuel Powerful said the development signals the best thing to come for the struggle.
6. The former Head of New Media for the Peoples Democratic Party, PDP, and Convener Concerned Nigerians, Deji Adeyanju has again been arrested. The police got his arrested again for staging another peaceful protest, demanding the freedom of renowned blogger and convener of PDP National Youth Frontier, Austin Okai and other social media activist currently in detention on Monday.
7. A Federal High Court sitting in Asaba, Delta State has ordered that one Fidelia Omoile , a serving Independent National Electoral Commission’ s ( INEC) official in Isoko- South Local Government Area of Delta State, be remanded in prison custody for conspiracy and money laundering. The EFCC had claimed that Omoile collected the sum of N112,480,000.00 as a bribe during the countdown to the 2015 Presidential election from former Minister of Petroleum Resources, Diezani Alison- Madueke.
8. Ogun State Governor, Ibikunle Amosun, on Monday, forestalled bloodshed as he prevented a crowd of sympathisers at the Ede, Osun State, country home of late Senator Isiaka Adeleke, from lynching Ms Idia Babalola, Special Adviser to Osun State Governor, Rauf Aregbesola as the crowd demanded she leaves the venue of the burial. It took the intervention of the governor for calm to return to the venue.
9. Operatives of the Civilian Joint Task Force, CJTF, on Monday morning killed two female suicide bombers while the third blew herself up in Maiduguri, the Borno State capital. The female bombers, attempted to enter the city through Mamanti village in Jere Local Government Area at about 5.10 a.m, but were shot dead before detonating the explosive devices strapped to their bodies.
10. Report says th Economic and Financial Crimes Commission has charged the immediate past Governor of Niger State, Babangida Aliyu, and the 2015 governorship candidate of the Peoples Democratic Party in the state, Umar Nasko, with an alleged N3bn fraud. According to the report charges have already been filed before a Federal High Court in Minna, Niger State.
