Nigerian newspapers: 10 things you need to know this Tuesday morning

Good morning! Here is today’s summary from Nigerian Newspapers:

1. Report says some of the schoolgirls abducted by Boko Haram militants from the Government Secondary School, Chibok, Borno State refused to be part of a group of 82 released by the insurgents at the weekend. one of the negotiators involved in the release, a legal practitioner, Zannah Mustapha, said some of the abducted girls refused to join the released girls because they must have been radicalised.

2. In sports, Chelsea is now three points away from being crowned Premier League champions, following their 3-0 defeat of Middlesbrough on Monday night. Diego Costa, Marcos Alonso and Nemanja Matic all scored at Stamford Bridge, as Chelsea moved a step closer to the title.

3. Report has it that no fewer than 15 persons were reportedly killed on Sunday when Fulani herdsmen attacked three communities in Logo Local Government Area of Benue State. The communities include Tse Akaa, Mba’abaji and Tse Orlalu all in Ugondo Mbanar District of Logo Local Government Area of Benue State.

4. Acting President, Prof. Yemi Osinbajo on Monday disclosed that President Muhammadu Buhari excitedly said that the release of the 82 Chibok girls had boosted his health. He said Buhari made the comment when he received the girls in the presidential villa, Sunday night. Osinbajo disclosed this during a visit by a delegation from Borno to appreciate the Federal Government.

5. Forbes Africa has released the list of Richest African musicians as today. Selection was made based on endorsement value, popularity, show rates, sales, awards, YouTube views, appearance in newspapers, investment, social media presence, influence etc. Nigerian artistes, Don Jazzy, Wizkid and Davido, are among the top ten richest African musicians. Akon is, however, the number one on the list.

6. The Naira on Monday appreciated against the dollar at the parallel market. The currency gained three points to exchange at N388 to the dollar, while the pound sterling and the Euro closed at N495 and N425. The Naira was sold at N362 to the dollar, while the pound sterling and the Euro closed at N495 and N423 at the Bureau De Change (BDC) window.

7. Report now has it that Governor of Lagos State, Akinwunmi Ambode, has ordered the temporary suspension of the Vehicle Inspection Officers (VIOs) from the roads in the state with immediate effect. According to the report, Ambode has asked the officers to stay away until further notice.

8. Five persons have lost their lives, with scores injured and property worth millions of naira destroyed, in a fresh crisis that erupted in kaduna, at the weekend. The report claims the fracas emanated from an argument at a popular football viewing centre in Kabala North of Kaduna, due to disagreement over BetNaija, a football betting company.

9. Report has claimed that there is confusion in an Idoma community, Owukpa, as residents have now embarked on exhuming corpses of married women who were earlier buried in their husband’s home. The community is reportedly acting on the order of the Onomo of Owukpa who believes that their old tradition of burial rites must not be discarded. The report claims that the community may incur the wrath of their ancestral gods for disturbing dead bodies already buried peacefully.

10. For killing her husband with a kitchen knife, a Lagos State High Court in Ikeja on Monday sentenced a 29-year-old woman, Onyinyechukwu Akunne, to seven years’ imprisonment. The incident occurred during an argument over Premier Lotto, popularly known as Baba Ijebu, but the woman only pleaded guilty to charge of grievous bodily harm and was consequently sentenced.
