Nigerian newspapers: 10 things you need to know this Tuesday morning

Good morning! Here is today’s summary from Nigerian Newspapers:

1. Following constant attacks on the University of Maiduguri by Boko Haram insurgents, Borno State Governor, Kashim Shettima on Monday approved the immediate release of N50m for the ongoing digging of trenches behind the University, which covers 27 kilometres, through which Boko Haram insurgents have been accessing the school in the dead of the night. If the project is completed, it will become impossible for the insurgents to cross over in cars or on foot.

2. The Nigeria Union of Local Government Employees (NULGE) said that 23 states of the federation currently owed local government workers arrears of salaries ranging from one to 16 months. National President of the union, Ibrahim Khaleel in a statement on Monday said Bayelsa state leads with 10 to 16 months, followed by Kogi between seven to 15 months; Delta State eight to 14 months, etc.

3. Chairman, Board of Trustees, of the newly registered Action Democratic Party (ADP), Chief Alani Bankole has suggested that Nigerians above 65 years of age should not be in government. Bankole, father of ex-Speaker, Dimeji Bankole, said this during a lecture organised by the Freelance and Independent Broadcasters Association of Nigeria (FIBAN) in Abeokuta.

4.Boko Haram has released a video ​to confirm that it abducted policewomen. In the video released ​through a journalist, Ahmad Salkida​, ​the sect leader, Abubakar Shekau spoke for about 10 minutes‎​. He said several female officers were abducted‎​​ during​ ​Boko Haram attack on a joint police/military convoy near Maiduguri​ on June 20.

5. Embattled leader of the Indigenous People of Biafra (IPOB), Nnamdi Kanu, has said that he demanded for bullets and guns from a group of US-based Nigerians in the for self-defense against the incessant attacks on Igbos by the Fulani herdsmen and not to hurt anyone.

6. Graduates from Egbema and Gbaramatu Kingdoms, the hometown of ex-militant leader, Chief Government Ekpemupolo alias Tompolo, in Delta State, have said they will shut down the operations of Chevron Nigeria Limited in the area if it fails to convert its graduate operator/maintenance trainees into permanent workers within 48 hours. The graduates gave the warning under the aegis of KOMBOT-Egbema and Gbaramatu Graduates Association.

7. The Police said in Lagos on Monday that they have arrested five suspected armed robbers believed to be terrorising motorists on Victoria Island. Police said their men swooped on the suspects following a tip-off by by three victims of the robbery attacks.

8. The Borno State Police Command Monday confirmed that sixteen people including some suicide bombers were killed in the explosion which occurred on Sunday night in the city of Maiduguri while 13 others were injured and are currently receiving medical and surgical treatments at the University of Maiduguri Teaching Hospital UMTH. The State Commissioner of Police, Mr. Damian Chukwu disclosed this at a press briefing.

9. The Nigerian Army has disclosed that it has held a stakeholders’ meeting with the Sardauna Emirate and the Mambilla traditional council in Taraba State following the recent crisis in the State where several lives were lost. The aim is to look at permanent solution to the crisis and to forestall recurrence.

10. The All Progressives Grand Alliance (APGA) has attacked the leader of the Indigenous People of Biafra (IPOB), Nnamdi Kanu, for calling on Anambra people to boycott the forthcoming gubernatorial poll in the state. The party, in a statement on Monday said the call was irresponsible and devoid of focus, asking Kanu to drop his arrogance and become humble.
