Nigerian Newspapers: 10 things you need to know this Tuesday morning

1. Justice Letam Nyordee of a High Court in Port Harcourt yesterday sentenced three out of seven people facing trial in the killing of four students of the University of Port Harcourt, popularly called Aluu four to death.

Those sentenced to death include, ex-Sergeant Lucky Orji, Ikechukwu Luis Amadi and David Chinasa Ogbonda.

2. The Biafra Zionist Federation, BZF, on Monday announced an interim ‎government to run the affairs of Biafra.

Self-acclaimed President of Biafra, Barr. Benjamin Onwuka, who made the announcement at a press briefing in Enugu, named Prof. Part Utomi as the foreign minister. Also in the cabinet are Prof. Chukwuma Soludo- Central Bank of Biafra, CBB; Mrs. Aruma Oteh- finance minister; Ohanaeze President, Chief Nnia Nwodo- Ambassador to US; Prof. Jerry Gana- transport; Labaran Maku- aviation, among others.

3. Ibrahim Idris, inspector-general of police (IG), has issued strong warning to commissioners in all the state commands against corruption, saying they could be thrown out of the force for it.

He asked officers to conduct themselves professionally and to handle criminal cases diligently.

4. The Lagos State Commissioner of Police (CP), Mr. Fatai Owoseni, Monday handed over the keys to the state secretariat of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) to a member of the party’s Board of Trustees (BoT), Chief Bode George.

The Lagos Police Command had recently barricaded the party’s secretariat and shut out staff and members of the party loyal to the ousted factional state chairman, Segun Adewale following a letter issued from the party’s national secretariat and addressed to the Commissioner of Police.

5. The Center for Anti-Corruption and Open Leadership, CACOL, has asked the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission, EFCC, to bring to bear its constitutional powers to arrest any lawmaker, no matter how highly placed, who shows arrogance in honouring its invitations.

According to the Executive Chairman of CACOL, Debo Adeniran, the EFCC as an institution created by law can within the ambit of the powers constitutionally bestowed on it invite any Nigerian for the purpose of interrogation and investigation.

6. The Indigenous People of Biafra, IPOB, has accused the federal and Anambra State governments of recruiting those it described as uneducated individuals and students in the universities to infiltrate its ranks in order to label the organisation a violent group.

IPOB alleged that the government mobilized people who went to the Catholic church and harassed worshippers to create room for security operatives to begin to arrest IPOB members in Ekwulobia and its environs.

7. The Federal Government has said it relied heavily on Dangote refinery to fulfill its promise to Nigerians to end fuel importation by December 2019.

The Minister of State for Petroleum Resources, Mr. Ibe Kachikwu, said the government was ready to play its part as a responsible government to assist in making sure the project was completed before the scheduled date.

8. The Yoruba Council of Elders, pan Yoruba socio-political group, Afenifere, and a youth organisation, Yoruba Socio-Cultural Association have blamed the executive arm of government and the National Assembly for the suspension of work on the Lagos-Ibadan Expressway.

They described the development as a clear case of negligence, stressing that the government’s action was unpardonable in view of the number of lives being lost to auto crashes on the road.

9. Nigerians on social media, particularly on Twitter, yesterday, came hard on Cable News Network (CNN) over its comment on the health of President Muhammadu Buhari for leaving the country on medical vacation for over 85 days.

They described the news station as mischievous and busybody.

10. The Defence Headquarters, Abuja, on Monday, blamed the weather and informants as responsible for the recent Boko Haram killings, including the attacks on an oil exploration team, comprising the Nigerian National Petroleum Corporation workers and University of Maiduguri lecturers.

According to the Director of Defence Information, Major Gen. John Enenche, there was a collaboration with the terrorists as the insurgents didn’t attack other convoys apart from the oil exploration team.
