1. The Academic Staff Union of Universities (ASUU) has announced a conditional suspension of its nationwide strike. This comes after several meetings between top government officials and members of the union. ASUU has now directed its members to return to classrooms with immediate effect.President of the Union, Professor Biodun Ogunyemi, addressed a news conference at about 9.30pm Monday night, at the end of another meeting with government delegation, led by the Minister of Labour, Senator Chris Ngige.
2. Sixty-seven persons suspected to be members of the Indigenous People of Biafra (IPOB) have been remanded in prison for their alleged involvement in the mayhem and security unrest that rocked Abia State recently. This was made known by the Abia State Police Commissioner, Anthony Ogbizi, following their arraignment on Monday before a High Court in the state.
3. The Chef Imam of Kurmiri Village in Titiwa ward of Magumeri local government area of Borno state has been killed alongside four others, when suspected Boko Haram sects attacked the village. The incident happened on Sunday night.
4. The Indigenous People of Biafra (IPOB) has accused the Nigerian government and military of withholding details on the whereabouts of its leader, Nnamdi Kanu.The group said it was convinced that Kanu may have been killed, lamenting that he has not been seen or heard, days after troops stormed his residence. This is contained in a statement by its spokesman, Emma Powerful on Monday.
5. A delegation from the Northern Governors Forum are in the South East and South South geo-political zones of the country in efforts to douse tension and promote peace and dialogue among all sections of the country. The team led by the Chairman of the Forum and Governor of Borno State, Alhaji Kashim Shattima, will have also Governor Aminu Bello Masari of Katsina, Aminu Waziri Tambuwal of Sokoto, Abubakar Atiku Bagudu of Kebbi and Hon Simon Lalong of Plateau States as part of the delegation.
6. The spiritual leader of the Brotherhood of the Cross and Star, His Holiness Olumba Olumba Obu has prayed against the actualization of Biafra sovereignty, insisting that it will not succeed since God has not approved of it.
7. President of the Senate, Senator Bukola Saraki, on Monday described as unconstitutional the decision of the Nigerian Army to declare the Indigenous People of Biafra, IPOB, as a terrorists group. Saraki, in a statement said, due process was not followed before proscribing the group both by the Nigerian Army and South East governors. He said initiating the right process will go a long way in demonstrating to the world that Nigeria follows laid down process under every circumstance.
8. Report says fuel scarcity is imminent following the nationwide strike called by the United Labour Congress of Nigeria on Monday. It was reported that the situation has led to the shutdown of fuel depots in Apapa, Lagos and other parts of the country, threatening the supply of petroleum products to filling stations.
9. The Naira has weakened further to 369 per United States dollar on the back of waning supply of the greenback in the foreign exchange market. The external reserves have,however, reportedly hit $33bn, and the Central Bank of Nigeria appears to be reducing its intervention, both in frequency and amount, in the foreign exchange market.
10. The Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) has released a new timetable for the recall of Senator Dino Melaye. According to the new timetable, in a statement by the Secretary of INEC, Augusta C. Ogakwu, the recall process will commence on October 3 with the Notice of Verification. The last day for the submission by observers has been fixed for October 5, while the publication of list of accredited observers is for October 9. The conduct of verification will take place on October 14 in all polling units in Kogi West Senatorial District.
