Nigerian newspapers: 10 things you need to know this Thursday morning

Good morning! Here is today’s summary from Nigerian Newspapers:

1.National leader of the APC, Asiwaju Ahmed Bola Tinubu lost his son, Jide Tinubu. Report says Jide suddenly collapsed and died from what was suspected to be a heart attack around 9 pm on Tuesday. Late Jide was a law graduate of the University of Liverpool, England. He obtained a Masters degree in Maritime Law from the University of London and was called to the Nigerian Bar in 1999.

2. The Confederation of African Football (CAF) has named Super Eagles’ Victor Moses and William Troost-Ekong among 30 finalists for the 2017 CAF African Player of the Year Award. For the player of the year award meant for African players based in the continent, Junior Ajayi, who plays for Al Ahly football club of Egypt, is the only Nigerian on the list.

3.Ekiti State Governor, Mr Ayodele Fayose has again called for​ ​the sack of Federal High Court Judge, Okon Abang​. He said Justice Abang​, whom he referred to as “father christmas”​ has polluted the judiciary enough and that the National​ ​Judicial Council (NJC) must save the judiciary from what has now​ ​become the Abang’s embarrassment by sacking him. This was contained in a statement issued by his​ ​spokesman, Lere Olayinka.

4.The ongoing Senate probe into various allegations against the Inspector-General of Police, Ibrahim Idris was stalled on Wednesday, following the inability of the police boss to appear before the committee. Senate, however, insisted that the IGP must appear next Tuesday as failure to do so will lead to his arrest.

5.The Group Managing Director (GMD) of the Nigerian National Petroleum Corporation (NNPC) Maikanti Baru, has said the proposed oil exploration activities and biofuel projects in Benue State would generate over one million direct and indirect jobs for the people of the State. He made the disclosure on Wednesday during a courtesy call on Governor Samuel Ortom at the Benue Peoples’ House in Makurdi, the state capital.

6.The Federal High Court in Abuja on Wednesday struck out an application by former President Goodluck Jonathan seeking an order to set aside the subpoena issued on him to appear in defence of a former National Publicity Secretary of the Peoples Democratic Party, Mr. Olisa Metuh. The court held that since Jonathan has not been served with the court’s subpoena directing him to appear in court yet, it was wrong to rely on news reported in the media to file the application.

7.The Economic and Financial Crimes Commission has raised the alarm over an alleged plot to frame its Acting Chairman, Mr. Ibrahim Magu, with ownership of assets abroad. The spokesman for the commission, Mr. Wilson Uwujaren, said in a statement on Wednesday that certain interests at the receiving end of the agency’s anti-corruption campaign were behind the alleged frame up.

8.Ebonyi State Governor, David Umahi, has fired the state Commissioner for Justice and Attorney General of the state, Augustine Nwakwoagu. A statement Wednesday evening, signed by his Principal Secretary, Mr. Clement Nweke, Umahi said that Mr. Nwankwoegu was sacked over alleged acts inconsistent with his official duties. The statement directed the former commissioner to hand over government property in his possession to the permanent secretary, Ministry of Justice before the close of work on Thursday, 2 November, 2017.

9.Report claims the Head of Service, Mrs. Winifred Oyo-Ita, and Chief of Staff to the President, Abba Kyari, were allegedly involved in a shouting match on Wednesday over the leak of the memo she recently sent to President Buhari in respect of the controversial recall of sacked chairman of Presidential Task Force on Pension Reforms, Abdulrasheed Maina.

10.The Federal Government has filed six counts against the embattled former Chairman of the Pension Reforms Commission, Abdulrasheed Maina. The charges, filed before a Chief Magistrates’ Court in the Federal Capital Territory, Abuja, were followed by a fresh warrant for the arrest of Maina, who is currently on the run. The warrant of arrest was signed by the Chief Magistrate, Elizabeth Jones.
