Nigerian Newspapers: 10 things you need to know this Thursday morning

1. Governor Willie Obiano of Anambra State on Wednesday received his certificate of return from the Independent National Electoral Commission, INEC, following his victory in the Saturday’s governorship election.

The State Resident Electoral Commissioner, REC, Dr Nkwachukwu Orji, handed over the certificate of return to Obiano at INEC’s headquarters in Awka, the state capital.

2. Emeka Ojukwu Jnr, son of the late Igbo warlord, Dim Chukwuemeka Ojukwu, yesterday explained that he dumped the All Progressives Grand Alliance (APGA) for the All Progressives Congress (APGA) because his peopled needed to occupy their rightful place in governance and political decision-making process of the country.

Ojukwu said he decided to join the APC because it is a party that can contend equally with any other political party in the South East.

3. Chairman of the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission, EFCC, Ibrahim Magu, Wednesday said that his agency would not relent in its efforts to arrest and prosecute the former Director General of the Department of State Security, DSS, Mr. Ita Ekpenyong and the sacked Director-General of the National Intelligence Agency, NIA, Ayo Oke.

Magu told House correspondents after the inauguration of the Audit Committee on the Recovery and Management of Stolen Assets within and outside Nigeria by President Muhammadu Buhari that he was not in any way deterred by the prevention of the arrest of the two former heads of government agencies by armed men from DSS and NIA.

4. The All Progressives Congress (APC) stalwart, Asiwaju Bola Ahmed Tinubu, said yesterday that President Muhammadu Buhari’s nomination for second term will follow due process. Tinubu told reporters after a meeting with Afenifere leader, Chief Reuben Fasoranti in Akure, the Ondo State capital, that the President is a believer in “rule of law and due process”.

5. Vice President Yemi Osinbajo on Wednesday called on youths in the country to join political parties ahead of the 2019 elections and stop complaining.

Osinabjo said it was not enough for youth to always lament about bad leaders, but that they needed to break the status quo by taking active part in order to be elected and create the transformation needed for a change.

6. A Lagos-based legal practitioner, Barrister Ademola Odusote, has instituted a legal action against the Inspector-General of Police, Mr. Ibrahim Kpotun Idris, the Nigeria Police Force and the Attorney-General of the Federation, Ibrahim Malami (SAN).

In an originating summon dated 20th November, 2017 and filed at the Federal High Court in Abuja on Wednesday, the lawyer is seeking an order of the court, compelling IGP Idris ”to do equity by forthwith obeying and enforcing all subsisting court judgements won against the Police”.

7. The new acclaimed leader of the Indigenous People of Biafra, IPOB, Ezenachukwu Okwudili, has revealed the whereabouts of Nnamdi Kanu, former leader of the outlawed group.

Okwudili claimed that the ex-leader of the pro-Biafra group fled to London using his British passport.

8. The Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) has denied knowledge of its National Caretaker Committee (NCC) Chairman, Senator Ahmed Makarfi’s presidential ambition.

The party, through its National Publicity Secretary, Prince Dayo Adeyeye also faulted the call for the resignation of Makarfi by one of the chairmanship aspirants, Chief Bode George.

9. Nigerian Air Force (NAF) in furtherance of Operation LAFIYA DOLE, yesterday destroyed a Boko Haram facility used for manufacturing of Improvised Explosive Devices (IEDs).

Air Commodore, Olatokunbo Adesanya, Director of Public Relations and Information, said the Boko Haram facility is located in a place known as YIWE Forest, located 23km south of Konduga in Borno State.

10. President Muhammadu Buhari has ordered a military crackdown on bandits operating in rural communities in Zamfara State, following fresh attacks on some communities in Shinkafi and Maradun Local Government Areas.

The President has also approved the request of the Minister of Defence, Brig-Gen. Mansur Dan Ali (rtd) for the stationing of a full battalion of Special Forces in Zamfara State, and the operationalization of the newly-established 8 Division of the Nigerian Army in Sokoto in the new Order of Battle (OBAT).
