Nigerian Newspapers: 10 things you need to know this Thursday morning

1. President Buhari’s son, Yusuf Buhari has been flown out of the country early Thursday morning. This is following his severe head injury in a bike crash where he also broke his limb.

2. Senate President, Bukola Saraki, has directed the Senate Committee on Petroleum Downstream to suspend its recess over the lingering fuel scarcity.

The Committee chaired by Senator Kabiru Marafa, has been meeting with relevant stakeholders to find a lasting solution to the fuel scarcity.

3. Lagos human rights activist and lawyer, Mr Femi Falana, (SAN) has accused Minister of Petroleum, Mr Ibe Kachikwu and Group Managing Director of the Nigerian National Petroleum Corporation (NNPC) Maikanti Baru of allegedly deceiving Nigerians that the country have enough fuel to cater for all consumers.

In a statement yesterday, Falana said: “Since the assurance was given over three weeks ago, the fuel crisis has been compounded without any solution in sight. In view of the shortage of petrol throughout the country it is indubitably clear that Kachikwu and Baru deliberately set out to deceive the Nigerian people when they gave the misleading impression that there was enough fuel to cater for all consumers.

4. There was an attack on kitchen staff on duty at Ikot Ekpene Prison in Akwa-Ibom State by some prisoners around noon on Wednesday.

It was gathered that the prisoners seized an axe from fellow inmate attached to the kitchen, inflicting a deep cut to inmates’ head in the process and immediately made for the rear entrance to the prison.

5.The President and founder of the Excellent Christian Ministry Int’l Inc, Apostle Dr. Ogochukwu T. Amaukwu has released his 2018 prophesies for Nigeria. In the prophesies he divided into three: individual; National; and the world and shared on social media, he stated that the untouchable in the country shall be touched.

6. The Peoples’ Democratic Party (PDP) has accused the President Muhammadu Buhari-led Federal Government of providing cover for huge corrupt acts directly involving the interests of members of the All progressives Congress (APC) in the on-going fuel crisis in the country.

The opposition Party also urged officials of the federal government to stop dishing out falsehood to suffering Nigerians.

7. The Governor Rochas Okorocha-led Imo State Government has bowed to the pressure of the Catholic Church, restoring Assumpta Avenue street name.

The news circulated yesterday that the Government had renamed some popular streets in Owerri including the Assumpta Avenue to names such as Buhari Road, Sam Mbakwe and Azikiwe.

8. No fewer than seven persons were on Wednesday confirmed dead in several road accidents that occurred across Edo State during the Christmas and Boxing Day celebration.

It was gathered that some of the accidents occurred at night along the Benin-bye pass.

9. President Muhammadu Buhari has again declared his love for people of the South East, stressing that he would always be a friend of the zone. He said all the accusations and permutations of hatred are all lies calculated to create bad feelings against him by Igbo people.

10. Former Ballon d’Or winner, George Weah has been announced as the President-elect of Liberia, West Africa.

The 51-year-old former World Footballer of the Year won thirteen out of the fifteen counties, with his 73-year-old opponent Joseph Boakai getting only two (2) counties.
