1. President Muhammadu Buhari, yesterday approved the release of $1 billion for the procurement of security equipment to be used in the fight against Boko Haram insurgents.
The Minister of Defence, Mansur Dan-Ali, who made this disclosure at the end of the national Security Council meeting presided over by President Buhari, said the meeting was to review the security situation in the country.
2. The 24 governors on the platform of the ruling All Progressives Congress, APC, have agreed with President Muhammadu Buhari that APC constitution should be respected in electing a new National Working Committee, NEC.
The Governors have now resolved to back President Buhari, who had at the party’s National Executive Committee meeting last week declared as illegal, a proposal for the extension of the tenure of the John Odigie-Oyegun-led NWC of the party.
3. Another Nigerian lawmaker, Senator Mustapha Bukar, is dead.
Family sources said Mr. Bukar, who represents Katsina North (Daura Zone) in the Senate, died on Wednesday morning after a brief illness and his body was committed to earth at the Daura central cemetery at 6.14 p.m.
4. A former deputy governor of Ekiti State and chieftain of the Peoples Democratic Party, Dr Sikiru Tae-Lawal, has announced his resignation from the party.
Dr Tae-Lawal, who served as the deputy governor in the government of Chief Segun Oni, said he was quitting the PDP due to “irreconcilable differences” ahead of the forthcoming primary of the party.
5. Three persons lost their lives on Wednesday while many were injured after an electric pole fell on a commercial vehicle, popularly known as danfo in Lagos.
The accident happened between Ilasa and Itire area of the state.
6. Two soldiers and several armed bandits have been confirmed dead in a gun battle that ensued between troops and terrorists in Bawar Daji village, Anka local government area of Zamfara state.
The council chairman of the LG, Alhaji Mustapha Gado, who confirmed the clash to newsmen on Wednesday, said the troops deployed to the village engaged the armed bandits in a fierce fire exchange, thus resulting to the death of two soldiers, including a captain.
7. The Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) on Wednesday insisted that the Presidency should make public all issues relating to the so-called private visit of President Muhammadu Buhari to the United Kingdom.
The party, which queried the Presidency for always shrouding issues around the President in secrecy, pointedly demanded a “full disclosure on the scope, purpose, direct destination, duration as well as the cost and source of the funding for this undisclosed tourism.”
8. Four members of a family were Wednesday butchered in Taraba State by suspected herdsmen, while a 9-month old toddler survived by whiskers.
According to Police Commissioner, David Akinremi, who confirmed the attack and killings, the incident took place in Bikka village of Takum local government area, the home of Governor Darius Ishaku and former Defence Minister Theophilus Danjuma.
9. The Federal Government has demanded justice from the United Kingdom government on the killing of a Nigerian, Mr. Abraham Badru, by a gunman in London.
Mrs Abike Dabiri-Erewa, Senior Special Assistant to the President on Foreign Affairs and Diaspora, made the demand in a letter written to the British High Commissioner in Nigeria.
10. On the foreign scene, the opposition party’s candidate, Rtd Brig Julius Madaa Bio of the Sierra Leone Peoples Party (SLPP) has been declared the winner of the March 31 Sierra Leone Presidential run-off election.
According to the result announced by the Sierra Leone’s National Electoral Commission (NEC) on Wednesday in Freetown, Bio received 1,319,406 votes representing 51.81 per cent of the total valid votes cast, 2,546,577, to defeat the candidate of the ruling party.
