Nigerian newspapers: 10 things you need to know this Thursday morning

Good morning! Here is today’s summary from Nigerian Newspapers:

1. Governor of Ekiti State, Ayo Fayose, has directed the withdrawal of an alleged murder case against the state Chairman of the All Progressive Congress, APC, Chief Jide Awe, and other members of the party. Ekiti State Attorney General and Commissioner for Justice, Kolapo Kolade, filed an application for the withdrawal of the case against Awe on Wednesday, saying it was to promote peace and brotherliness among the people of Erinjiyan Ekiti, which is the community where both the complainant and the defendants in the matter hail from.

2. The Lagos State Police Command on Wednesday uncovered an illegal brewery where fake malt drinks and stout are produced at Egbe-Afa, Igbobo area of Ikorodu in Lagos. Five of the suspects behind the factory were also arrested by a team led by the Lagos State Commissioner of Police, Imohimi Edgal, who took newsmen to the scene of the crime. It was discovered that the illegal brewery produced malt drinks, stout and Ethanol which they pump into trucks to bottle at another location.

3. The Police Command in Nasarawa State has confirmed the killing of five persons in a fresh attack on Kadarko village and environs in Obi Local Government Area of the state. Mr Kennedy Idirisu, the command’s spokesman, told reporters on Wednesday in Lafia that the attackers suspected to be armed herdsmen invaded the village last night and shot everyone on sight.

4. The Federal Executive Council (FEC) on Wednesday approved the establishment of the Nigerian Army University. The university will be located in Biu, Borno State. Minister of Education, Adamu Adamu, disclosed this to State House correspondents after the cabinet meeting presided over by Vice President, Yemi Osinbajo.

5. The Peoples Democratic Party, PDP, on Wednesday alleged that the All Progressives Congress, APC, and President Muhammadu Buhari were plotting to turn Nigeria to a one-party state. PDP said the plot was aimed at pushing a “self succession” for Buhari as their chances of winning the presidential election was getting slimmer by the day. This was disclosed during a press conference in Abuja by spokesperson of the PDP, Kola Ologbondiyan. The party also alleged they were plans to arrest those contesting against the president.

6. No fewer than 10 persons were killed on Tuesday night and many others injured in coordinated attacks by suspected herdsmen in Logo and Ukum local government areas of the state. While seven persons were killed in Gbeji, in the Ukum LGA, three were killed in Channel 1, in Logo LGA.

7. The Presidency has made clarification on the confusion trailing the whereabouts of recovered loots. It confirmed that the funds were being paid into dedicated accounts with the Central Bank of Nigeria (CBN). The Special Assistant to the President on Justice Reform, Mrs. Juliet Ibekaku, speaking at press conference in Abuja, said all stolen public funds recovered so far were paid into special asset recovery accounts with the CBN, which in turn, transfers such funds into the Federation Account, from where they have been utilised to fund the budget since 2017.

8. The management of the Obafemi Awolowo University, OAU, Ile Ife, Osun State, has queried professor Richard Akindele, who was accused of demanding sex from a female student. This was disclosed by the Public Relations Officer of OAU, Abiodun Olanrewaju.

9. Family of the leader of the Indigenous People of Biafra (IPOB), Nnamdi Kanu, has asked the Federal Government to release the corpse of their son for burial if he is truly dead. The family believing unconfirmed report that Kanu was killed by the Nigerian military, in an attempt to quell the agitation for Biafra asked the federal government to release Kanu’s corpse to them so as to give him a befitting burial.

10. The All Progressives Congress, APC has said there is no plan for a sole candidacy of President Muhammadu Buhari in the coming presidential election. The National Publicity Secretary of the party, Mallam Bolaji Abdullahi, said yesterday that other interested members of the party have the right to come forth and give Buhari a fight for the APC’s ticket.
