Nigerian newspapers: 10 things you need to know this Thursday morning

Good morning! Here is today’s summary from Nigerian Newspapers:

1. President Muhammadu Buhari has released a new Executive Order into law. The new order is meant to regulate money laundering and tax evasion. The President released the Executive Order number eight, tagged Voluntary Offshore Assets Regularization Scheme, VOARS, on Wednesday. According to the order, Nigerian taxpayers who hold offshore assets and incomes are expected to, within a period of 12 months, declare voluntary those assets and pay taxes on them.

2. The Atiku Presidential Campaign Organisation has taken President Muhammadu Buhari to the cleaner, raising 14 questions for the President and the All Progressives Congress, APC to answer. The campaign organization said the government and the ruling party have abandoned governance and taken up the full duty of hurling insults at the former Vice President, but has achieved nothing throughout its tenure.

3 . The All Progressives Congress (APC) will not field candidates for all elective positions in Zamfara State in the 2019 general elections. This followed a declaration by the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC). INEC in a memo explained that APC failed to meet the October 7 deadline for conducting primaries to elect candidates for the elections. The letter signed by the acting secretary of the commission, Okechukwu Ndeche, was addressed to APC national chairman, Adams Oshiomhole.

4. The All Progressives Congress (APC) has rejected the verdict of the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC), that the party did not hold valid primary elections in Zamfara State. The party on Wednesday insisted that primaries indeed took place in Zamfara State. In the letter dated October 10 and signed by its chairman, Adams Oshiomhole, APC said that INEC did not capture the true situation of the APC primaries in Zamfara State.

5. Eleven people on Wednesday in Abuja suffered various degrees of burns from a gas explosion that occurred at Rosy Restaurant, Area 11. Report claims that the victims who were immediately taken to Asokoro general hospital suffered some 40 to 50-degree burns. The explosion was reportedly caused by the gas stationed at the back of the restaurant.

6. Justice Chiwendu Nworgu of the High Court in Port Harcourt has made a consequential order nullifying all actions taken by the Ojukaye Flag Amachree led All Progressives Congress in Rivers state. Justice Nworgu ordered that the nomination and subsequent election of candidates for the Governorship seat and all elective positions in the APC in the State was null, void and of no effect. The judge also gave an order restraining the National Leadership of the APC from recognizing the results of the May 12, 19, 20 and 21, 2018 congresses that produced Ojukaye.

7. Labour and the Federal Government appear to have gone into a new phase of controversy over the new minimum wage. While Labour is insisting the Tripartite Committee has concluded on the new minimum wage and has agreed on N30,000 for FG workers, the Federal government said it has proposed N24,000 as the new minimum wage and that deliberation is still in progress.

8. An Ikeja High Court has struck out a fraud case instituted by the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission, EFCC, against Innoson Motors and its CEO, Innocent Chukwuma. Justice Olusola Williams struck out the case due to the inability of the EFCC to produce him in court for arraignment.

9. Ahead of Libya encounter with Nigeria in an African Nations Cup qualifier, the Head coach of the national team, Adel Amrouche has resigned. The Libyan Football Federation confirmed his resignation on Wednesday, adding that he was frustrated by the working conditions with the team.

10. An Abuja High Court sitting at Apo, on Wednesday, voided the expulsion of Senator Buruji Kashamu who is representing Ogun East, from the Peoples Democratic Party, PDP. The court, in a ruling that was delivered by Justice Valentine Ashi, equally set aside the expulsion of Ogun State Chairman of the party, Engr Adebayo Dayo.
