Nigerian Newspapers: 10 things you need to know this Thursday morning

1. President Muhammadu Buhari has presented the 2019 budget proposal to a joint session of the National Assembly, NASS, amid encomiums and booing.

Buhari was accompanied to the National Assembly by Vice President Yemi Osinbajo and members of the Federal Executive Council, FEC, on Wednesday.

2. The National Bureau of Statistics (NBS) on Wednesday released Nigeria’s latest Labour Force Statistics.

NBS said the number of unemployed Nigerians has hit 21 million.

3. The All Progressives Congress (APC) has blamed the opposition Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) for the rowdiness during President Muhammadu Buhari’s budget presentation at the National Assembly.

The party in a statement by its Publicity Secretary, Lanre Issa-Onilu on Wednesday evening, blamed the PDP lawmakers, adding that their actions succeeded in eroding the “remnant of the public’s respect, (if any) that the PDP has in the eyes of any respectable Nigerian.”

4. The Oyo State chapter of Association of Senior Civil Servants of Nigeria has threatened that workers in the state will embark on total strike from 2nd January, 2019 if the federal government failed to implement N30,000 minimum wage on or before December 30, 2018.

Chairman of the association, Comrade Babatunde Balogun, said “There will be total paralysis of government activities if the agreement is not reached and implemented by the end of This year”.

5. The Federal Road Safety Corps (FRSC) said on Wednesday that three persons were burnt to death in an accident at the Total filling station area of Okene, Kogi State.

Adelaja Ogungbemi, FRSC Unit Head in Okene, told NAN that many people also sustained varying degrees of injuries and seven vehicles were completely burnt in the accident.

6. Third Republic Senate President, Senator Ameh Ebute, has revealed why some members of the National Assembly booed President Muhammadu Buhari during the 2019 budget presentation on Wednesday.

He said that the lawmakers who booed President Buhari did so because of constituency projects.

7. The Acting Chairman of the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) Mr Ibrahim Magu, has condemned the murder of former Chief of Defence Staff, Air Chief Marshal Alex Badeh.

He also commiserated with the Badeh family over the unfortunate incident and assured that no stone would be left unturned in making sure those behind the dastardly act were brought to book.

8. The Federal Government has declared Tuesday, 25th, Wednesday 26th December, 2018 and Tuesday 1st January 2019 as Public Holidays to mark the Christmas, Boxing Day and New Year Celebrations, respectively.

Minister of Interior, Abdulrahman Bello Dambazau, made the declaration on behalf of the Federal Government in a statement signed by the ministry’s Director of Press, Mohammed Manga on Wednesday evening.

9. Abdullahi Ibrahim, the Borno Commandant of the Nigerian Security and Civil Defence Corps (NSCDC), said one of the two female Boko Haram bombers nabbed by the command is the wife of Mamman Nur, a factional leader of the terrorist group.

The teenager, who was identified as Fatima Muhammed Kabir, was arrested recently, along with another woman, Amina Salihu at Borno Express Motor Park.

10. The Presidential Candidate of the African Action Congress (AAC), Mr Omoyele Sowore, on Wednesday, dragged the Nigeria Election Debate Group (NEDG) to court.

Sowore sued the NEDG over the exclusion of his party’s Vice-Presidential Candidate, Mr Rabiu Rufai in the debate, which held on Dec. 14.
