Nigerian Newspapers: 10 things you need to know this Thursday morning

1. President Muhammadu Buhari has nominated Major General Paul Tarfa (rtd) as the chairman of the governing board of the North East Development Commission (NEDC).

He also nominated Mohammed Alkali as the Managing Director and Chief Executive Officer of the commission, according to a letter read at the Senate plenary by Senate President, Bukola Saraki on Wednesday.

2. The Federal Government has asked the Nigerian Financial Intelligence Unit, NFIU, to freeze five bank accounts belonging to the Chief Justice of Nigeria, Walter Onnoghen.

In a letter from the office of the Attorney-General of the Federation, AGF, said the restriction should be in place pending the determination of the case against Onnoghen at the Code of Conduct Tribunal (CCT).

3. The Code of Conduct Bureau (CCB) has finally served the criminal charges on false asset declaration directly to the Chief Justice of Nigeria (CJN) Justice Walter Samuel Nkanu Onnoghen preparatory for his arraignment on January 22, 2019 at the Code of Conduct Tribunal (CCT).

With the endorsement of the service of the charge, the coast is clear for the Buhari Government to formally arraign Justice Onnoghen on January 22, 2019 before Justice Danladi Yakubu Umar led-tribunal.

4. Former Police spokesman, Frank Mba, ACP, has been named the new force Public Relations Officer.

Mba replaces erstwhile Force Public Relations Officer, Jimoh Moshood.

5. A chieftain of National Union of Road Transport Workers (NURTW), Musiliu Akinsanya a.k.a MC Oluomo, was on Tuesday night discharged from a Lagos hospital, where he was receiving treatment.

Source said the NURTW leader may have left for the United States immediately he was discharged from hospital on Tuesday night.

6. The Presidential Investigation Panel on the Special Anti-Robbery Squad (SARS) has resolved to summon Gov. Ibrahim Dankwanbo of Gombe over the death of one of his personal aides.

Mr Tony Ojukwu, chairman of the panel disclosed this at its resumed sitting on Wednesday in Maitama, Abuja.

7. The Nigerian Army has raised an alarm over outbreak of Lassa Fever.

A statement on Wednesday by the Acting Deputy Director Army Public Relations, 3 Division, Maj Ikechukwu Eze, said the disease killed an officer on Tuesday.

8. The Joint Health Sector Unions, JOHESU, has threatened to resume the industrial action it suspended on 30th May 2018.

The body said this was imperative following Federal Government’s failure to resolve lingering disputes.

9. The traditional ruler of Ningi Emirate in Bauchi state Alhaji Yunusa Muhammadu Danyaya has lost his second son, Muhammad Yunusa

The deceased, who holds the traditional title of Yariman Ningi, died in the early hours of Wednesday in Bauchi.

10. President Muhammadu Buhari has declined assent to five bills transmitted to him by the National Assembly in 2018.

The Bills refused presidential assent include the Maritime Security Operations Coordinating Board ( Amendment) Bill, 2018; Revenue Mobilization Allocation And Fiscal Commission (Amendment) Bill, 2018; The Bankruptcy And Insolvency Bill, 2018; Federal Polytechnic (Amendment) Bill, 2018 and The Energy Commission (Amendment) Bill, 2018.
