1. President Muhammadu Buhari has signed into law, the Federal Competition and Consumer Protection Bill.
According to a statement by the Presidential Liaison Officer to the Senate, Senator Ita Enang, the bill is meant to promote economic efficiency, maintain competitiveness in the Nigerian market and protect the welfare of consumers
2. Former Abia state Governor, Orji Uzor Kalu, has challenged the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC), to arrest former president, Olusegun Obasanjo, for allegedly embezzling $16billion meant for the power sector.
According to Kalu, Obasanjo wants to control every sitting president and remain relevant for life.
3. An Ikeja High Court, on Wednesday sentenced Saheed Arogundade, Chairman, National Union of Road Transport Workers (NURTW), Boundary/Aiyetoro Unit, Lagos State to death for the murder of a 32-year-old policeman, Gbenga Oladipupo.
Justice Olabisi Akinlade discharged and acquitted Arogundade’s five co-defendants Mustapha Layeni, Adebayo Abdullahi, Seyi Pabiekun, Sikiru Rufai and Yusuf Arogundade of a two-count charge of conspiracy to commit murder.
4. The Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) has taken final decision on Rivers State All Progressive Congress (APC) fielding no candidate for the forthcoming general elections.
Barrister Festus Okoye, INEC National Commissioner and Chairman, Voter Education and Publicity said that the commission had taken a position with regards to court rulings and will not field any candidate from APC at the moment.
5. The Nigeria Labour Congress (NLC), has returned its President, Ayuba Wabba, unopposed for a second term of four years.
Wabba will head a 16-member National Administrative Council (NAC), of NLC, who were equally elected unopposed to administer the affairs of NLC for the next four years.
6. The acting Inspector-General of Police (IGP), Mr Mohammed Adamu has ordered the posting of the newly promoted Assistant Inspectors-General of Police (AIGs).
A statement by the Force Spokesman, ACP Frank Mba on Wednesday in Abuja, said AIGs Wilson Inalegwu was posted to Zone 9, Umuahia, Abdul Danwawo, AIG Maritime, Adeyemi Ogunjemilusi, Directing Staff NIPPS, Maurice Yusuf , Research and Planning and Ibrahim Lamorde, Force Intelligence Bureau.
7. The Police Service Commission (PSC) has approved the removal of Edgal Imohimi, as the Lagos State Commissioner of Police, following the recommendation of the acting Inspector-General of Police, Mohammed Adamu.
Mu’azu Zubairu will now replace him as the new Police Commissioner in the state.
8. The Nigeria Police Force, on Wednesday said it would soon prune down or withdraw its Special Protection Unit (SPU) and Counter Terrorism Unit (CTU) operatives attached to certain categories of personalities.
The acting Inspector-General of Police ( I-G), Mr Mohammed Adamu,who made the disclosure at a meeting with Commanders of SPU and CTU in Abuja, said that the decision to withdraw the personnel was aimed at ensuring full mobilisation and deployment of the personnel for the upcoming general elections.
9. The Arewa Youth Consultative Forum, AYCF, on Wednesday, reacted to the alleged threat by Kaduna State Governor, El-Rufai that foreigners who interfere in the forthcoming elections in Nigeria will be put in ‘body bags.’
AYCF President General, Yerima Shettima, said El-Rufai can only say that in Kaduna State.
10. The Nigerian Army has declared that Nigeria is currently facing the greatest threat to its existence as a nation.
Director of Army Public Relations, Brigadier General Sani Kukesheka Usman stated this during a media session to round up a nation-wide interactive meeting on promoting cordial but professionally excellent relationship between the Nigerian media and Nigerian military organized by the Human Rights Writers Association of Nigeria, HURIWA, in Port Harcourt, Rivers State.
