Nigerian newspapers: 10 things you need to know this Thursday morning

Good morning! Here is today’s summary from Nigerian Newspapers:

1. The Joint Admissions and Matriculation Board, JAMB, has rescheduled the conduct of the 2019 Unified Tertiary Matriculation Examination (UTME) to 11th April. The board also fixed 1st April for the conduct of its mock examination earlier scheduled for Saturday, 23rd March. JAMB’s Head of Media, Dr. Fabian Benjamin, disclosed this in a statement on Wednesday, in Abuja.

2. A three-storeyed building on Wednesday collapsed at the Itafaji area of Lagos Island. Many children were reported dead while others got trapped but were later rescued. Report says the building house a primary school. The structure is reported to be a residential building with several apartments.

3. Atleast 41 people reportedly survived the collapsed three-storeyed building which trapped many occupants and students at Ita Faji, Lagos Island. The list of survivors, obtained on Wednesday evening, contains 41 names, five of whom are unnamed. The survivors comprise 22 females, 17 males and two persons whose gender was not listed.

4. The Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) on Wednesday rearraigned Gbenga Makanjuola, a Deputy Chief of Staff to Senate President, Bukola Saraki, before Justice Maureen Onyetenu of the Federal High Court sitting in Lagos on an amended 11-count charge bordering on alleged conspiracy, accepting cash payment beyond threshold and money laundering to the tune of N3.5billion.

5. Alhaji Hashim Suleiman, the Senior Special Assistant on Urban Beautification to Governor Abdullahi Umar Ganduje, has tendered his letter of resignation to Secretary to the State Government. In his resignation letter, he attributed his resignation to the failure of Governor Ganduje to concede defeat to the Guber candidate of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), Engineer Abba Kabir Yusuf, who won the election that has been declared inconclusive in controversial circumstances by the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC).

6. Gunmen, Wednesday, attacked the Divisional Police Command at Afuze, headquarters of the Owan-East Local Government Area of Edo State, killing the Divisional Police Officer (DPO) and three other officers on duty. The officers killed in the attack were: Supt. Tosimani Ojo, the DPO of the station; Sgt. Justina Aghomon, a pregnant woman, Insp. Sado Isaac and Cpl. Glory David.

7. The Imo State Governor, Rochas Okorocha on Wednesday declared that the Independent National Electoral Commission, INEC, lacks the power to withhold his Certificate of Return. Okorocha described the decision of INEC to withhold his Certificate of Return after being declared winner of the Imo West Senatorial election as unfortunate and unconstitutional. He claimed that INEC was being used by those fighting to stop him from going to the Senate.

8. The Nigerian government has banned Boeing 737 Max airplanes from flying into Nigeria’s airspace following a fatal crash in Ethiopia over the weekend. Hadi Sirika, Minister of Sate, Aviation, disclosed this to state house correspondents at the end of the Federal Executive Council (FEC) meeting, presided over by President Muhammadu Buhari.

9. Former Deputy National Publicity Secretary of the All Progressives Congress, APC, Comrade Timi Frank has revealed another midnight meeting between President Muhammadu Buhari, the Chairman of the Independent National Electoral Commission, INEC, Prof. Mahmood Yakubu, Chief of Army Staff, and the acting Inspector General of Police among others. Frank in a statement claimed that the meeting was called at the instance of the presidency on how to perfect victory for the ruling party in the six states already declared inconclusive by the INEC.

10. A road accident involving a truck loaded with cement and a tipper at Ibughubu Market, Umuchu, in Aguata Local Government Area of Anambra State has claimed six lives. DAILY POST gathered that the two drivers involved in the accident lost their lives, same too for four other unidentified persons around the market. Both trucks also destroyed property worth millions of naira and left scores of traders injured, including the conductor of one of the trucks.
