Nigerian newspapers: 10 things you need to know this Thursday morning

Good morning! Here is today’s summary from Nigerian Newspapers:

1. A Catholic priest, Reverend Father Clement Ugwu, who was kidnapped from his Parish, St Mark Catholic Church, Obinofia Ndiuno in Ezeagu Local Government Area of Enugu State has been found dead. The body of late Fr. Ugwu was found in a bush decomposing on Wednesday, a week after he was allegedly kidnapped.

2.The presidential candidate of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), Atiku, has provided a breakdown of how the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) reduced his votes in 31 states and the Federal Capital Territory (FCT). Atiku made the claim in a petition he and his party filed before the presidential election tribunal. According to him, data from INEC server showed that he actually polled a total of 18,356,732 votes, to defeat President Muhammadu Buhari, who had 16,741,430 votes.

3. An audio has emerged of the co-convener of ‘Our Mumu Don Do Movement’ Charlyboy, allegedly confessing to collecting money from Festus Keyamo, Spokesperson of the All Progressives Congress Presidential Campaign Council. In the audio, Charlyboy was allegedly heard saying he met with Festus Keyamo and collected money from him. He, however, did not state whether he collected the money in order to attack Atiku Abubakar or not.

5. A High Court of the Federal Capital Territory sitting in Bwari, Abuja, has fixed April 3 to commence hearing on a contempt charge pending against the National Chairman of the All Progressives Congress, APC, Adams Oshiomhole. On Wednesday, Justice Othman Musa gave the nod for hearing to begin on the contempt proceeding that was initiated against Oshiomhole by Chairman of the APC in Imo State, Mr. Daniel Nwafor.

6. Buba Galadima, a former ally of President Muhammadu Buhari, has claimed that President Muhammadu Buhari and his party, the All Progressives Congress (APC), paid some people to convince Atiku Abubakar, candidate of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) in the February 23 elections, not to challenge the result in court. Galadima stated this when he featured on Sunrise Daily on Wednesday.

7. The Kano State chapter of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) has called on the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) and security agencies to ensure that the Saturday supplementary election in the state was seamless. Mr. Rabiu Bichi, Kano State PDP Acting Chairman, who made the call in a statement on Wednesday, also appealed to INEC and security agencies to be neutral during the elections. Bichi said that security agencies had a duty to ensure that voters and their votes were protected from harassment, intimidation and manipulations from any quarters.

8. Five persons have been reportedly killed during a clash between two rival cult groups in Urua Ekpa community, Uyo, Akwa Ibom State. The incident it was gathered started on Tuesday night and continued till Wednesday morning and was between members of the Viking confraternity and the Iceland group. The cause of the rampage could not be ascertained as at press time, but sources said the two groups allegedly clashed over a girl.

9. Governor of Imo State, Rochas Okorocha, on Wednesday filed a suit against the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) for refusing to recognise him as winner of the election in Imo West senatorial district. Okorocha in a suit filed at the Federal High Court in Abuja, asked the court to compel INEC to issue him the Certificate of Return having been declared winner of the election.

10. The All Progressives Congress, APC, has asked the Independent National Electoral Commission, INEC, to provide list of accredited observers ahead of Saturday’s rerun election in Kano State. The ruling party filed the request on Wednesday in a statement signed by Kano State chairman, Abdullahi Abbas Sanusi. APC also requested for card readers of local government areas in the state in order to guard against electoral malpractices.
