Nigerian Newspapers: 10 things you need to know this Thursday morning

Good morning! Here are 10 things you need to know this morning:

1. Due to the inability of the family of the 11 female Bayelsa politicians who were burnt to death in an auto crash on Saturday near the old Ahoada Market in Rivers state, the government and the family of the deceased have agreed that a mass burial be held for them.

2. The Defence Headquarters yesterday said that it has continued to record great results against the insurgents in their renewed war against the group in the northeast. It disclosed that over 300 members of the group have been killed, five different types of armoured fighting vehicles, an anti-aircraft gun, about 50 cases of packed bombs and 8 different types of Machine Guns, 5 Rocket Propelled Grenade, 49 boxes of various types and calibres of ammunition as well as 300 motorcycles were destroyed in the ongoing battle.

3. In a new video released by the Boko Haram sect, the leader of the group, Abubakar Shekau has threatened to disrupt the coming elections, saying that even if they are dead, the elections will not hold.

4. The Independent National Electoral Commission, INEC, and its Chairman, Attihiru Jega had yesterday reiterated the importance and the reliability of the card reader meant to be used for accreditation in the coming elections. Jega who appeared before the National Assembly displayed how the card reader works using some Senators’ cards for the reliability test.

5.In a fresh letter to President Goodluck Jonathan and the INEC, the All Progressives Congress has warned that the judgment barring the involvement of soldiers in the coming elections is respected in the forthcoming polls.

6. A Lagos-based lawyer, Mr. Tope Alabi, has requested a Federal High Court in Lagos to declare an Assistant Inspector-General of Police, Joseph Mbu, unfit to remain an Officer of the Police Force.

7. The National Assembly in its review of the 1999 constitution has allowed for an independent candidate who can now stand for an election without belonging to a political party.

8. A Federal High Court sitting in Osogbo, Osun state capital on Wednesday threw out an application seeking a mandatory order to nullify the April 2011election conducted by the Independent National Electoral Commission, INEC, in Osun State.

9. Former Adamawa state Governor, Murtala Nyako has asked the National Judicial Council and CJN to immediately investigate into why the Chief Judge of the Federal High Court, Justice Ibrahim Auta allegedly stalled a case a challenging his impeachment last year.

10. In opposition to the court judgment barring soldiers from taking part in the coming general elections, Governor, Ayodele Fayose has insisted that President Jonathan will deploy soldiers in the elections, accusing the APC of planning to cause crisis in the country.
