Nigerian Newspapers: 10 things you need to know this Thursday morning

Good morning! Here are 10 things you need to know this morning:

1. It was disclosed to newsmen on Wednesday after the Federal Executive Council meeting that President Jonathan will handover to the President-Elect, Gen. Buhari on May 28; 24 hours before the actual handover date. Information MInister, Patricia Akwashiki, made this disclosure.

2. The three kidnapped Orekoyas’ kids were on Wednesday recovered after an undisclosed ransom was paid by the family. Report says the three children were found naked inside a bag. The children were immediately taken to the Police hospital as they were reportedly ravaged by mosquitoes.

3. President-Elect, Gen. Muhammadu Buhari is expected to run a slim government devoid of unnecessary duplication of offices. According to different reports, Gen. Buhari will merge some parastatals that play similar roles and possibly scrap the Minister of State’s office.

4. The Senate Wednesday set up a Senate Adhoc Committee on Constitution Review, led by the deputy Senate president, Ike Ekweremadu to look into President Jonathan’s veto on the Constitution Amendment Bill which he returned to the National Assembly yesterday. The committee is expected to go on a two-day retreat from Wednesday (yesterday) to today, after which , the Senate will take a position on the matter.

5. A Federal High Court sitting in Apo, Abuja, has ordered the release of former President Obasanjo’s book-My Watch. The court has asked that the Nigerian Customs Service to release the books that have been in its custody since last year without payment of demurrage.

6. There was panic on Wednesday on Broad Street and Marina in Lagos Island when the Mamman Kontagora House, a building housing the Federal Mortgage Bank and other big organizations was gutted by fire. Report says the fire which started around 9am, was caused by a surge from a generator on the third floor of the building.

7. President-Elect, Muhammadu Buhari, has denied media report that he walked some government officials out of his residence in Daura, Katsina State. The denial is contained in a statement released by the Director of Media and Publicity of the APC Presidential Campaign, Mallam Garba Shehu, on Wednesday. Garba said nothing close to the incident happened as reported by an online newspaper.

8. Senator-elect and chieftain of the Peoples Democratic Party in Ogun State, Chief Buruji Kashamu, has openly avowed his respect for the National Leader of the All Progressives Congress, APC, Bola Tinubu, referring to him as his role model. In an open letter to Tinubu, Kashamu said it was important to appreciate the political zeal of the former Lagos governor having led an opposition for 16 years and then finally became victorious. kashamu said despite being in the opposition, it was right to give honour to whom honour is due, hoping to work with Tinubu to transform Yorubaland as well as Nigeria.

9. The Independent National Electoral Commission, INEC, has has now fixed April 25 for the rerun of governorship and state house of assembly elections in Imo and Taraba states. This was disclosed by the Imo State Resident Electoral Commissioner, Dr Gabriel Ada in Owerri yesterday.

10. A former Minister of Petroleum Resources, Prof. Tam David-West, has said that death sentence should be set aside for any politician involved in election rigging. David West who said this on Wednesday argued that rigging was worse than armed robbery, hence perpetrators should face similar punishment.
