Nigerian Newspapers: 10 things you need to know this Thursday morning

Good morning! Here are 10 things you need to know this morning:

1. The petition filed by the Peoples Democratic Party, PDP, candidate in the April 11 election, Mr. Jimi Agbaje, against Akinwunmi Ambode of the All Progressives Congress, APC, has been dismissed by the Lagos State governorship election Tribunal sitting in Ikeja. According to the Tribunal, the petition was incompetent, as despite Agbaje’s calling that the election be nullified, he did not request for a fresh one.

2. A Federal High Court sitting in Lagos, yesterday morning discharged and acquitted a former Aviation Minister, Chief Femi Fani-Kayode, who had been undergoing trial over corruption charges. According to the presiding Judge, Rita Ofili-Ajumogobia, the prosecution’s case was “feeble” and failed to provide clear evidence.

3. Following the appointment of Mrs. Amina Zakari as the Acting National Chairman of the Independent National Electoral Commission by President Muhammadu Buhari, the national leadership of the Peoples Democratic Party has rejected the appointment, saying the President is too close to the new Acting Chairman of the Commission.

4. The Nigerian National Petroleum Corporation (NNPC) on Tuesday cautioned Nigerians against panic buying. It said it had stepped up efforts to maintain constant supply and distribution of petroleum products nationwide. This is contained in a statement issued by the corporation and signed by Mr Ohi Alegbe, the Group General Manager.

5. President Muhammadu Buhari has declared that the Federal Government will soon embark on the rebuilding of areas affected by insurgency in the North East. The President who was represented by his Vice in a visit to Maiduguri, the Borno state capital said villages, towns, houses, markets and places of worship in all communities displaced by the Boko Haram insurgency in Borno, Adamawa and Yobe states will be rehabilitated soon.

6. Reports emerged this morning that the Department of State Services have now redeployed to state commands the 253 operatives that were earlier deployed in the Presidential Villa, Abuja. They are to wait in their command until further directives are gotten from the presidency.

7.Following the crisis rocking the APC, President Muhammadu Buhari on Wednesday evening met quietly with some 29 members of the House of Representatives led by Mr. Femi Gbajabiamila. The meeting held inside the Conference Hall of the First Lady’s Office in the Presidential Villa, Abuja.

8. The Deputy Senate President, Ike Ekweremadu on Wednesday cautioned the APC to stop playing politics with the National Assembly, asking the leadership of the party to initiate effective policies that will turn around the nation’s economy and the lives of the people. He said the expectation of Nigerians was that after the election, APC would start work in earnest and not to play politics.

9. Commercial Taxi Drivers Union in Abuja on Wednesday staged a protest against extreme actions of tax force and VIO in Abuja. The protest reportedly started after a pregnant woman died while a driver and a task force official engaged in a fight as the car was still in motion. The car reportedly rammed into a pole, leading to the death of the pregnant woman.

10. Rape victims, Blessing Yahaya and her mother have cried out over the injustice done to them by one Yakubu Yahaya. They said Mr Yahaha who raped Blessing’s mother 16 years ago, also raped the daughter ( Blessing) 11 years after and abandoned them. They claimed that despite their cry for justice, nothing has been done to bring the said man to book.
