Nigerian newspapers: 10 things you need to know this Thursday morning

Good morning! Here are 10 things you need to know this morning:

1. The Peoples Democratic Party, PDP, has dissociated itself from the ongoing investigation of some of its members who may have been indicted for corruption related offences. The party in a statement issued by its National Vice Chairmen who met in Abuja on Tuesday night, said it did not send any of its member to steal, hence anyone found culpable should be ready to face the music. The party also threatened to suspend those found guilty.

2. President Muhammadu Buhari during the Thursday’s media chat expressed great anger over agitation for the release of the leader of the Indigenous People of Biafra, IPOB, Nnamdi Kanu. The President disclosed that Kanu has two passports, one Nigerian, one British and came to the country without using any passport. He also said he was working with some telecom experts to install transmitters on masts. He asked why such person should be granted bail.

3. Relatively, President Buhari frowned at the bail granted to the former National Security Adviser, Sambo Dasuki, saying that with the magnitude of corruption perpetrated by Dasuki and others, it will be unreasonable to have them granted bail. He said the Court is expected to hear other charges against the former NSA before Dasuki could be considered for bail.

4. The Federal Government has said it will not protect any high profile member of the ruling All Progressives Congress, APC, involved in the alleged misuse of security funds. This was disclosed by the Minister of Information and Culture, Alhaji Lai Mohammed on Thursday in Lagos. He asserted that the war on corruption was holistic.

5. Leader of the House of Representatives, Mr Femi Gbajabiamila has said that nothing has been communicated to the National Assembly yet regarding fuel subsidy removal as well as the hike in electricity tariff. He affirmed that the federal government cannot remove subsidy or hike electricity tariff without proper legislation.

6. The Lagos State Governor, Akinwunmi Ambode, on Wednesday arrested two Nigerian Air Force cadets in the Mile 12 area of the state. The cadets were nabbed while maltreating an artisan, Dahiru Lawal, for allegedly breaking the windscreen of a Chrysler Stratus car with number plate, KRD 267 DV. The Governor after setting Dahiru free, urged the police to investigate the matter.

7. Father of the detained Biafran activist, Nnamdi Kanu, His Royal Majesty, Eze Israel Kanu, IPOB and MASSOB have denied reports that Kanu has apologised to President Mohammadu Buhari for allegedly referring to him as a terrorist. They said the media report was being sponsored by the Federal Government agents to frustrate Kanu.

8. The Kaduna State Prisons on Wednesday denied that the leader of the Islamic Movement in Nigeria, also known as Shi’ite, Sheikh Ibraheem El-Zakzaky, was in the prison. The Comptroller of Kaduna Prisons, Abubakar Argungu, however, admitted that 191 members of the group were in the custody of the prison.

9. The All Progressives Congress, APC, in Bayelsa State, yesterday, described as a “sign of desperation” effort by the candidate of the Peoples Democratic Party, PDP and the state governor, Mr. Seriake Dickson, to meet with President Muhammadu Buhari at the villa. This was contained in a statement issued by the Director, Media and Publicity of the Sylva/Igiri Campaign Organisation, Chief Nathan Egba.

10. The Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) has said that the new pump prices of petrol announced Tuesday by the federal government was a disappointing anti-climax and continuation of the All deception by the APC government. The party in a statement yesterday by its national publicity secretary, Chief Olisa Metuh said beside its “deceptive element” the reduction in the N87 per litre pump price to N86 and N86.50 per litre was highly insignificant.
