Nigerian newspapers: 10 things you need to know this Thursday morning

Good morning! Here is today’s summary from Nigerian Newspapers:

1. A Federal High Court, sitting in Abuja, Wednesday, endorsed the terms of out of court settlement adopted by the DAAR Communications Plc and the National Broadcasting Commission (NBC). This development followed the ensued dispute over the controversial suspension of the operational licence of DAAR Communications Plc by the NBC. Justice Inyang Ekwo adopted the 7-point terms of settlement as consent judgment of the court

2. Nigeria have qualified for the round of 16 at the ongoing Africa Cup of Nations, following their 1-0 win over Guinea on Wednesday. Gernot Rohr’s men found it tough against the Syli Stars, who had Naby Keita in their ranks from the start, but the breakthrough arrived in the second half after Kenneth Omeruo’s header gave the Eagles the much-deserved lead and they now have six points from 2 matches.

3. The Committee on the Recovery of Imo Government Property has alleged that about N50 billion worth of property belonging to the state was discovered to be missing after former Gov. Rochas Okorocha left office. Mr Jasper Ndubuaku, the Chairman of the committee, said this on Wednesday at a press conference in Owerri, while speaking on the recoveries so far made by the committee.

4.The Head of Delegation of the European Union to Nigeria and ECOWAS, Amb. Ketil Karlsen, on Wednesday, said 62 million Nigerians live without access to improved water and spend over half an hour travelling to fetch water. The European Ambassador equally said the organization has spent more than 260 million euros in reaching more than ten million people in 14 states of the country.

5. The Joint Admissions and Matriculation Board (JAMB) says it has withdrawn the results of four candidates who participated in its 2019 Unified Tertiary Matriculation Examination (UTME). This was announced in a statement by the board’s Head, Media and Information, Dr Fabian Benjamin in Lagos. According to the statement, the candidates are found to have attempted to fraudulently increase their scores at the examination.

6. The Presidential Election Petitions Tribunal has adjourned to July 1 for ruling on the application by the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) and its presidential candidate, Atiku Abubakar urging it to set aside its proceedings of June 11. The chairman of the tribunal, Justice Mohammed Garba adjourned ruling on Tuesday after listening to parties in the matter.

7. The Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) and the All Progressives Congress (APC) in Bayelsa State are back at each other’s throat over the forthcoming local council election set to take place on the 10th of August. In the latest round of exchanges, Governor Seriake Dickson, who fired the first shot, accused the APC of planning to boycott the council election because the party lacked the capacity to win any election in Bayelsa State. However, the APC in a swift response taunted Dickson’s metrics of strength as faulty.

8. The Economic and Financial Crimes Commission, EFCC, on Wednesday, raided and arrested seven suspected internet fraudsters in their hideout at No.15, Giwa Road, Barnawa High-Cost area of Kaduna State. The suspects, which include, six males and one female were arrested sequel to an intelligence report received by the Commission, spokesman Tony Orilade said. An identity card belonging to a Special Assistant of the National Assembly (House of Representatives) bearing Iyere Eromoseze Sylvester was found during the raid.

9. Former Minister of Information, Alhaji Lai Mohammed, on Wednesday, failed to appear before Justice Folashade Giwa of the Federal High Court Abuja, to explain his role in the alleged approval of N2.5billion to Pinnacle Communications Ltd. The money was for the purpose of the Federal Government Digital Switch Over (DSO) project. Mohammed was listed by the ICPC prosecution counsel, Henry Emore as additional witness failed to appear as he was said to have travelled out of the country.

10. The All Progressives Congress (APC) in Zamfara State has announced plans to challenge some elective positions presently being occupied by the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) in the State. The state Chairman of the party, Alhaji Lawali Liman, disclosed this at a press briefing held at the party’s state Secretariat in Gusau, on Wednesday. Liman giving an update on the elective positions given to PDP and other parties said INEC was too hasty to declare the party with the second highest vote.
