1. The National Judicial Council (NJC) has asked President Muhammadu Buhari to appoint Acting Chief Justice of Nigeria, Justice Ibrahim Tanko Muhammad as the substantive Chief Justice of Nigeria (CJN). The NJC made the call at an emergency meeting on Friday in Abuja. The Council also recommended to Buhari names of judges to be appointed as Chief Judges and Grand Kadis for eight states – Lagos, Anambra, Ebonyi, Niger, Taraba, Kano, and Jigawa states.
2. The Super Eagles are through to the last four of the Africa Cup of Nations, following a thrilling 2-1 win over South Africa on Wednesday night. Samuel Chukwueze gave the Eagles an early 1-0 lead, latching onto his own rebound to slot past the goalkeeper. However, Bafana Bafana levelled in the second half, thanks to Video Assistant Referee (VAR) decision. With the match looking to head into extra time, William Troost-Ekong forced the ball over the line in the final minute of play. Nigeria will now play either Ivory Coast or Algeria, depending on the outcome of today’s game.
3. Operatives of the Economic And Financial Crimes Commission, EFCC, Port Harcourt’s Zonal Office, have arrested seventeen suspected internet fraudsters at their hotel hideout in Warri, Delta State. A statement by EFCC spokesman, Tony Orilade, said they were arrested on Wednesday in a sting operation, with different exotic cars. The suspects are: Jolomi Jemide; Suo Ajorbuku; Wilson Chukwuma; Faith Umukoro; Felix Fimber; Isaac Boro; Emmanuel Etanoma; Aghogho Ovuakporaye; Tokoma Mbabov; Tom Wisdom; Elvis Imannivwie; Chinedu Chukwu; Okojikoko Presley; Nyore Arkoro; Godwin Etanoma; Morris Victor and Elvis Okorare.
4. President Muhammadu Buhari has congratulated the Super Eagles for “another spectacular outing that has confirmed Nigeria’s progress to the next level in the Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON) in Egypt. In a statement by his Spokesman, Femi Adesina after the team’s win over South Africa, Buhari charged them to go all out and win the Nations Cup.
5. The General Overseer of the Redeemed Christian Church of God (RCCG), Pastor E. A. Adeboye, has said that the fact that he is quiet, does not mean he is silent on national issues. In a statement signed by the Public Relations Officer of the church, Olaitan Olubiyi, Adeboye explained that there are different ways of responding to issues affecting the country. The cleric was reacting to a protest staged at the Redemption Camp on Monday by some veteran entertainers.
6. President Muhammadu Buhari, on Wednesday, submitted to the Senate request for the appointment of his Special Advisers. This was contained in a statement signed by Charles Akpan, Deputy Director, Office of Senior Special Assistant to the President on National Assembly Matters. Citing section 151 of the constitution of the Federal Republic of Nigeria 1999 as amended which confers on him the power to appoint Special Advisers to assist him in the performance of his functions, the President requested the kind consideration of the distinguished Senators to appoint 15 Special Advisers.
7. Nigerian Governors have kicked against oil subsidy to marketers by the Nigeria National Petroleum Corporation (NNPC). Kayode Fayemi, chairman of the Nigeria Governors’ Forum (NGF), made the demand when he led a delegation to Mele Kyari, the Group Managing Director.
8. A prosecution witness, Ms Thelma Coco-Bassey, on Wednesday alleged that Adeshina Ogunlana, a former Chairman, Nigerian Bar Association (NBA), Ikeja branch, accused of N20.1 million fraud, lavishly spent money belonging to the association, which he allegedly kept in polythene bags.
9. The Inspector General of Police, IGP Mohammed Adamu on Wednesday visited five police personnel attacked by members of the El-Zakzakky Islamic Movement of Nigeria at the National Hospital. Adamu told newsmen in Abuja during the visit that the victims were attacked in the course of discharging their duties. He expressed dissatisfaction over the act and commended the police personnel for showing restraint in terms of not moving the same way with the protesters. He said attacking police personnel protecting citizens was condemnable.
10. Anti-Yahaya Bello protesters on Wednesday protested on the street of Abuja chanting, “Yahaya Bello must go.” Bello is the current Governor of Kogi State. Protesters mobilized to the street after information got to them that the Kogi governor was at the National headquarters of the ruling All Progressives Congress in Wuse II to purchase his nomination and expression of interest form to contest the gubernatorial election slated for November 16.
