Nigerian Newspapers: 10 things you need to know this Thursday morning

Good morning! Here is today’s summary from Nigerian newspapers :

1. The Minister of Information and Culture, Alhaji Lai Mohammed has stated that the Federal Executive Council and not state governors will take the final decision on the proposed sale of some of the nation’s assets to battle the current economic recession.

Mohammed, who spoke on Wednesday after the weekly FEC meeting, said the clarification became imperative following the outcry that greeted the proposal by the National Economic Council for the sale of the country’s national assets.

2. Several passengers were robbed of their valuables along the ever-busy Enugu – Makurdi highway, in 9th Mile area of the state, in two separate attacks.

Some of the female passengers were also raped by the men of the underworld in the incident that occurred Thursday morning.

3. Respected cleric and founder of Deeper Life Bible Church, Pastor William Kumuyi, has called on the Federal Government to find a lasting panacea to the current economic recession, with the future of the country at heart.

Kumuyi, who gave this charge ‎in Abuja while interacting with journalists ahead of a crusade with the theme “Night of Supernatural Wonders”, said the country will soon come out of the current economic recession.

4. The Army said troops of Operation Lafiya Dole have killed nine suspected terrorists at Bulabulin, Borno.

Col. Sani Usman, acting Director, Army Public Relations, said the troops also injured several others in the fight which lasted for about sixty minutes on Wednesday.

5. Officials of the Independent National Electoral Commission are still collating results in the just concluded governorship election in Edo State. Unconfirmed results say both main contender, Godwin Obaseki of the APC and Ize-Iyamu of the PDP are running neck-and-neck.

6. The Nigerian currency, naira slumped to a new all-time low of 470 to the dollar on the parallel market on Wednesday, posting its biggest daily decline since the Central Bank of Nigeria adopted a flexible foreign exchange regime.

The local currency stood at 452 to the dollar at the close of trading on Tuesday, down from 445 against the greenback on Monday.

The naira closed flat at 312.99 against the dollar at the interbank market on Wednesday, according to data from FMDQ OTC Securities Exchange.

7. A Bureau De Change operator, Murtala Abubakar, has told a Federal High Court in Lagos that he never confirmed the source of the $4m cash given to him at the Presidential Villa by a former Senior Special Assistant to ex-President Goodluck Jonathan on Domestic Affairs, Waripamo-Owei Dudafa.

Abubakar who appeared as a witness before a Federal High Court in Lagos where Dudafa is being prosecuted for money laundering by the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission, said he had no reason to question the source of the currencies that Dudafa gave him.

8. The Nigerian National Petroleum Corporation, NNPC, has increased Nigeria’s petroleum products storage capacity by 87.70 million litres, with the re-commissioning of four products tanks at the Mosimi depot in Ogun State. According to the corporation, the re-commissioning of the storage tanks was part of efforts aimed at maintaining seamless supply and distribution of petroleum products across the country.

9. Association of Professional Bodies of Nigeria, APBN, has stated that the economic recession in the country was not bad as it was being painted in the media. According to the group, all government needs to do is to focus on governance with attendant needs of the citizenry, adding that Nigeria already had the resources to move out of recession as quickly as possible.

10. Finance Minister Mrs. Kemi Adeosun, Wednesday said Nigeria was already walking out of the economic recession following some positive measures the Federal Government had taken.

According to Adeosun, the recovery plan was to invest more in infrastructure and stop wastage in governance.
