Nigerian Newspapers: 10 things you need to know this Thursday morning

Good morning! Here is today’s summary from Nigerian Newspapers:

1. Nigeria won the third place playoff at the 2019 African Cup of Nations in Egypt on Wednesday night. The Super Eagles defeated Tunisia 1-0 to clinch a historic 8th bronze medal.

2. President Muhammadu Buhari, on Wednesday in Abuja, reiterated the determination of his administration to stop importation of basic items to create job opportunities for unemployed citizens across the country. The President stated this when he received leadership of the Nigeria Employers’ Consultative Association (NECA) led by its acting President, Mr Taiwo Adeniyi, at the Presidential Villa, Abuja.

3. President Muhammadu Buhari on Wednesday, sent a message to Fulani herdsmen in the country and told them to ignore the recent call by the Northern Elders Forum (NEF) asking them to leave the southern part of Nigeria. He questioned the intentions of the NEF and the other so-called leaders in delving into issues with unsolicited, ill-intentioned advice.

4. The Anglican Bishop of Egbu Diocese in Owerri North, Most Revd Geoffrey Okoroafor, yesterday warned South-East Governors never to accept any proposed plan of resettling Fulani herdsmen in the zone by the Federal government under whatever guise. The prelate claimed that RUGA is part of the Fulanisation and Islamisation agenda in the country.

5. The Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC), yesterday, handed over a forfeited five-storey building to the management of Voice of Nigeria (VON), a Federal Government-owned media organisation. The building is located on Plot 1386, Oda Crescent, Off Aminu Kano Crescent, Wuse II, Abuja. It becomes the Corporate Headquarters of VON, which until now, was squatting in its ‘parent’s house’, the Ministry of Information, popularly known as Radio House.

6. It was an emotional scene, Wednesday at the Presidential Election Petition Tribunal, as the Kogi State Witness for the Peoples Democratic Party, PDP, Mohammed Arume Yahaya suddenly burst into tears, saying there was no presidential election in the state.

Yahaya also alleged that the ruling All Progressives Congress, APC, brazenly allocated to itself a greater majority of votes. The witness who was ward collation agent at Abocho ward in Dekina local government Area of Kogi state reiterated before the tribunal that no election was conducted in the area.

7. Indigenes of Araromi Obu community in Odigbo Local Government Area of Ondo State have cried out over what they described as persistent attacks on their people by the Ikales of Okitipupa Local Government Area of the state. With two deaths already recorded, the community leaders, who addressed newsmen in Akure, the Ondo State capital on Wednesday, stated that social-economic activities of the town have been grounded due to the constant attacks.

8. The ruling All Progressives Congress, APC, has finally reacted to the murder of Funke Olakunrin, daughter of Chief Rueben Fasoranti, Afenifere leader, by yet to be identified gunmen. The party also urged Nigerians to be wary of partisan individuals making inciting comments. It said that some leaders were spreading hate and intolerance over the current insecurity in the country.

The ruling party called on leaders to be temperate in their language and actions, chiding some individuals it said formally occupied elective positions but failed to tackle many of the criminalities facing the country today.

9. Abia State Government yesterday said it has begun closing land sale gaps that may let in the suspended rural grazing area (Ruga) policy through the backdoor. This is as the state government has restricted the size of land that may be sold “over the counter” to five hectares.

It said lots of land above five hectares must now be approved by relevant government agencies.

10. The Southern and Middle Belt Leaders Forum (SMBLF) yesterday, condemned call by the Chairman of the Northern Elders Forum (NEF), Prof Ango Abdullahi, in which he asked Fulani herders to quit southern Nigeria. SMBLF also urged President Muhammadu Buhari to put a stop to the alleged divisive actions of Abdullahi. They said it will be very dangerous for Nigeria to return to circumstances that created the civil war in 1967.
