1. Senate on Wednesday acknowledged receipt of names of two President Muhammadu Buhari’s ministerial nominees from Kogi and Gombe States. The names forwarded by Mr. President which was announced on the floor by the Senate President, Bukola Saraki are Prof. Stephen Ocheni from Kogi State and Suleiman Zanna Hassan from Gombe State. The duo are expected to occupy vacant positions left in the Federal Ministry of Labour and Productivity as well as Ministry of Environment respectively.
2. The Senate on Wednesday summoned the Chairman of the Presidential Advisory Committee on Anti-corruption, Prof. Itse Sagay, over his comments over his comment on Tuesday that the Senate was full of people with questionable characters. He has however, said, that the Senate lacks the power to summon him.
3. Founder and General Overseer of the Omega Fire Ministries Worldwide, Apostle Johnson Suleman has filed a lawsuit against his alleged mistress, Stephanie Otobo, and online news outlet, Sahara Reporters, for defaming his character and image at the Ikeja High Court, Lagos State. Suleman filed a N1 billion suit on Stephanie Otobo, who claimed she had amorous relationship with him that resulted to pregnancy.
4. The Senate yesterday, suspended Senator Ali Ndume for six months for raising false allegations against the Senate President, Bukola Saraki and Dino Melaye through order 14 and 15 at plenary last week. The suspension follows report of Senator Samuel Anyanwu-led committee on Public Petitions, Ethics and Privileges which recommended for his suspension for one legislative year.
5. The crisis rocking the Assemblies of God came to a climax on Wednesday as the sacked General Superintendent of the Church was chased out of the church’s national secretariat located at the Independent Layout, Enugu State. The action was in compliance with the Supreme Court judgement which affirmed the sack of Prof. Emeka by the Appeal Court as the General Superintendent of the Church.
6. National Leader of the All Progressives Congress (APC), Asiwaju Bola Ahmed Tinubu, has confessed that he was worried when Akinwunmi Ambode became Governor of Lagos State, because of the huge debt he inherited. He hailed Ambode, referring to him as “a silent achiever”, who had done a lot despite the huge debt profile of N418.2 billion from former Governor, Babatunde Fashola.
7. A Federal Capital Territory High Court, Maitama, on Wednesday adjourned until May 25 to commence hearing in a case of rape of a minor brought against a Reverend Father, Anthony Ochigbo. Ochigbo, 44, of Catholic Church of Assumption, Asokoro, Abuja, on August 15, 2016 allegedly abused a 10-year-old girl sexually. He allegedly had an unlawful sexual intercourse with her in the church which contravened Sections 31 (1) and 32(2) of the Child Rights Act, 2003.
8. Human rights lawyer, Femi Falana, has said that the Senate’s suspension of Senator Ali Ndume was illegal and that it is the height of the serial illegality in the senate. IHe also said that in the case of Hon Dino Melaye & Ors v House of Representatives, the federal high court declared the indefinite suspension of the plaintiffs illegal and unconstitutional on the ground that a legislator could not be suspended for more than 14 days.
9. President Muhammadu Buhari on Wednesday, set up a committee, whose objective is to resolve the perennial rift between the executive and the legislature. The committee will be chaired by Vice President, Yemi Osinbajo. Other members of the committee are all ministers who were at one time federal legislators, as well as the Senior Special Assistants to the President on National Assembly Matters, Ita Enang (Senate) and Samaila Kawu (House of Representatives).
10. A Federal High Court, sitting in Abuja, Wednesday granted the bail application filed by the detained National Commandant of Peace Corps of Nigeria, Amb. (Dr.) Dickson Akoh. He was granted bail in the sum of N10m with a surety in the sum of N20m. He was also asked to deposit his travel documents to the Deputy Court Registrar (DCR) and shall have access to them upon request, through application. The court also requested that the surety must be an owner of a landed property in Abuja, the title documents should also be deposited with the DCR of the court.
