1. The Emir of Kano, Muhammadu Sanusi ll, on Wednesday, said the present administration’s economic model was faulty. Sanusi, while speaking at the Kaduna State Economic Summit in Kaduna, observed that currently, Nigeria was spending 66 per cent of its revenues to pay interests on debts, and that such a model would not work.
2. Prof. Pat Utomi, has blamed the administration of President Muhammadu Buhari for the economic challenges facing the country. Utomi on Wednesday said those attributing the recession to the fall in crude oil price were bad managers. He said the government of Buhari should have been futuristic in budget planning and management of resources.
3. Justice Jude Okeke of the FCT High Court sitting in Maitama has dismissed the 18-count criminal charges brought by the Federal Government against Justice Adeniyi Ademola of the Federal High Court, his wife, Mrs. Tolulope Olabowale, and a Senior Advocate of Nigeria (SAN) Joe Agi. The three defendants were discharged and acquitted from the criminal charges on the grounds that the prosecution did not prove a prima facie case against them. Justice Okeke, in a ruling on the no-case submission made by the defendants, held that the criminal charges against them were highly speculative and without iota of merit.
4. North West Vice Chairman of the All Progressives Congress [APC], Alhaji Inuwa Abdulkadir on Wednesday said he was not taken aback by the demolition of his residence in Kaduna by Gov. Nasir El-Rufa’i. He said the governor had earlier threatened to take such action against him.
5. A staff of the Independent National Electoral Commission, INEC, Christian Nwosu, Wednesday pleaded guilty to receiving N30 million as bribe from the N23billion allegedly disbursed by ex-Minister of Petroleum, Diezani Alison-Madueke, to compromise electoral officers before the 2015 general election.
6. The Bishop of the Catholic Diocese of Maiduguri, Most Rev. Oliver Doeme, on Wednesday, said no fewer than 500 Catholics were killed by Boko Haram agents in Borno State while 25 reverend fathers and 40 reverend sisters were displaced in the crisis. He also lamented that 250 Catholic churches were razed by Boko Haram militants in 2014 alone in the North-East.
7. The Naira on Wednesday lost its value and exchanged at N398 to a Dollar, while the Pound Sterling and the Euro closed at N485 and N415. At the Bureau de Change (BDC) window, the Dollar was sold at N362, while the Pound Sterling and the Euro closed at N483 and N430.
8. Zamfara State Governor, Abdulaziz Yari, on Wednesday reacted to criticisms trailing his comments on the outbreak of meningitis. He insisted that those who engage in fornication will be struck by inflictions from Allah. The statement by his Special Adviser on Media, Ibrahim Magaji Dosara, said Yari believes in the powers of Allah to inflict whatever punishment He decides on the human race. Meanwhile, majority of Nigerians have chided the governor over his comment.
9. Chelsea has continued its dominance in the Premier League title race as it defeated Manchester City 2-1 vat Stamford Bridge on Wednesday night. Eden Hazard scored the 2 goals to sail home the much needed victory against City who were able to score a goal.
10. The Indigenous of People of Biafra on Wednesday opposed secret trial of their leader, Nnamdi Kanu. The group said a secret trial of Kanu would spell doom for the Nigerian legal system. In a statement made available to newsmen in Awka, Anambra State, by the spokespersons for IPOB, Dr. Ikenna Chinaka and Mrs Grace Ukpai, the group condemned Justice Binta Nyako’s acceptance to try Kanu in secret.
