Nigerian newspapers: 10 things you need to know this Thursday morning

Good morning! Here is today’s summary from Nigerian Newspapers:

1. Former Vice-President, Namadi Sambo on Wednesday said his visit to the Acting President, Yemi Osinbajo, was a familiarisation one. He said nothing was unusual about the meeting. Sambo disclosed this while addressing the State House correspondents shortly after meeting Osinbajo behind closed doors inside his office at the Presidential Villa, Abuja.

2. Former Central Bank Governor, Professor Charles Soludo, yesterday, advised the current leadership of the apex bank to stop playing politics with foreign exchange and monetary policy. He equally called for the elimination of multiple exchange rates in the country as well as the forex restrictions on 41 items.

3. Wife of the President, Aisha Buhari, yesterday visited the 82 Chibok girls that were released by the Boko Haram sect. Special Assistant on Media Mrs Buhari, Adebisi Olumide-Ajayi, said the President’s wife visited the girls at a location in Abuja. She went alongside wife of the Acting President, Dolapo Osinbajo, wives of the governors of Zamfara State, Asmau Yari, Kogi State, Rashidat Bello; Bauchi State, Hadiza Abubakar, Nasarawa State, Mairo Al-Makura, and Sokoto State, Mairo Tambuwal.

4. It will be Real Madrid and Juventus in the final of this year’s Champions League. Despite losing 2-1 to city rivals Atletico Madrid on Wednesday night, Real Madrid qualified on 4-2 aggregate.

5. Joint Admission and Matriculation Board, JAMB, has said that operatives from the Nigeria Police, Economic and Financial Crimes Commission, EFCC, and the Independent Corrupt Practices and other Related offences Commission, ICPC, will monitor the examination centres in the coming Unified Tertiary Matriculation Examination, UMTE. JAMB Registrar, Prof. Is-haq Oloyede told newsmen in Abuja, saying each test centre will have a supervisor, a technical officer, a verification officer, three proctors as well as security agents.

6. Former Vice President, Chief Dr. Alex Ekwueme, Wednesday, said he was willing to support the leader of the Indigenous People of Biafra, IPOB, Mazi Nnamdi Kanu with his fatherly advice. Ekwueme spoke when the IPOB leader visited him at his Enugu residence. Kanu in turns promised to listen to advice from the elder statesman.

7. The Nigeria Union in South Africa said on Wednesday that two Nigerians were shot dead in Western Cape Province of that country. Mr Mike Ibitoye, the Chairman of the Union`s chapter in the province that the Nigerians were shot by unidentified assailants.

8. Report says a total number of 5,500 Nigerians would be deported from Mali and Libya, over various migration offences. The first batch of 250 Nigerians from Libya will arrive the country today. An additional batch of 250 Nigerians would also be deported from same countries next week . This was disclosed by Director General of NAPTIP, Julie Okah-Donli.

9. The Delta Police command, has confirmed that an inspector was killed and three other policemen injured by suspected Fulani herdsmen in Abraka, Ethiope East Local Government Area of Delta, Police Public Relations Officer (PPRO), DSP Andrew Aniamaka, said this in a chat with newsmen in Asaba,.

10. Governor Nasir el-Rufai of Kaduna State, yesterday, entered the dock to give evidence at a Kaduna High Court in a libel suit he instituted against the publishers of The Union newspapers, stating that he declared his assets as governor-elect, as mandated by the constitution, prior to taking the oath of office as Governor of Kaduna State, contrary to the report by the newspaper.
