1. The Federal Government has okayed a 29-member tripartite committee on a new minimum wage being agitated for by the workers.
The Minister of Labour and Employment, Chris Ngige, said the approval came after an extensive deliberation on the report of a technical committee on the issue, which he chaired.
2. The Nigeria Defence Headquarters has stated that there is no confirmation of a coup plot against the current government.
John Enenche, spokesman of the DHQ, who made this clarification, said the armed forces remained loyal to President Muhammadu Buhari, and in complete subordination to civil rule.
3. Ace lawyer and human rights lawyer, Femi Falana, has described Garba Shehu’s comments on Ibrahim El-Zakzaky’s detention as a show of official impunity.
Falana said, the comment by Gabrba, where he clamed that El-Zakzaky was not in detention but in protective custody was a clear indication that the presidential aide had become power drunk.
4. A Federal High Court sitting in Port Harcourt has ordered the remand of George Turnah, an ex-political ally to former President Goodluck Jonathan, in prison custody.
Turner, a former Special Adviser on Youths to the ex-managing director of the Niger Delta Development Commission, NDDC, Bassey Dan-Abia, is facing 2 counts bordering on obtaining by false pretence, money laundering and abuse of office to the tune of N3, 094, 268, 235.69.
5. Ololade Enikuomehin, a professor of Plant Pathology and Mycology has been named the Acting Vice Chancellor of the Federal University of Agriculture, Abeokuta, Ogun State.
At a handover ceremony on Wednesday, the Registrar and Secretary to Council, Mr. Mathew Ayoola, said the Senate of the university at its special meeting recommended the appointment of Enikuomehin with effect from May 24, 2017.
6. The United Kingdom on Wednesday deported 35 Nigerians for immigration-related offences.
The deportees – 30 males and five females – were airlifted aboard a chartered Titanic Airways aircraft and were received at the Murtala Muhammed International Airport Lagos by officers of the Nigerian Immigration Service, NIS, and the National Agency for the Prohibition of Trafficking in Persons, NAPTIP.
7. Popular politician and business man, Emmanuel Iwuanyanwu, has maintained that the Igbos will not break away from the country because they have invested in Nigeria more that Hausas and Yorubas.
Iwuanyanwu said that the Igbos were major stakeholders in the country and would not be party to any move to divide it.
8. Lawyer to the leader of the Indigenous People of Biafra, IPOB, Emeka Ephraim Ugwuonye has been temporarily banned from legal practice in Nigeria.
The former United States-based Nigerian lawyer, who was disbarred in New York and Maryland for professional misconduct, was yesterday also disbarred in Nigeria, to which he had relocated.
9. The Executive Secretary of Nigeria Christian Pilgrim Commission (NCPC), Tor Uja, has called on the Christian community in Nigeria to rise up in unity against what he termed as ‘forces trying to hinder the progress of the country.’
Uja noted that the current leadership of the country under President Muhammadu Buhari will not relent in building a virile nation for future generations of Nigerians.
10. Manchester United Foootball Club of England defeated Ajax 2 – 0 to win the Europa League final played last night in Stockholm.
