Nigerian newspapers: 10 things you need to know this Thursday morning

Good morning! Here is today’s summary from Nigerian Newspapers:

1. The Minister of Women Affairs, Aisha Alhassan, has declared that she would support former Vice President, Atiku Abubakar even if President Muhammadu Buhari declares to contest in 2019. Speaking with BBC Hausa, Alhassan explained that her choice of Abubakar was predicated on the fact that the former Vice President was her “godfather.” She also reiterated this during a visit to Abubakar during the sallah holiday. This was captured in a video.

2. Relatively, former Minister of Aviation, Femi Fani-Kayode, has said that the statement by Minister of Woman Affairs, Aisha Alhassan that she would vote against her employer, President Muhammadu Buhari should he decide to contest in 2019 shows that “things have fallen apart” for the Bubari’s administration. This was contained in a tweet by FFK.

3. Following Nigeria’s exit from recession, the All Progressives Congress (APC) on Wednesday said it was part of the fulfillment of President Muhammadu Buhari’s campaign promises. A statement by the National Publicity Secretary, Mallam Bolaji Abdullahi, however, admitted that there was still more work to be done, and assured that things would continue to get better.

4. The Joint Action Committee (JAC) comprising Senior Staff Association of Nigerian Universities (SSANU), Non-Academic Staff Union of Universities (NASU) and National Association of Academic Technologists, (NAAT), have announced their decision to commence strike on September 11. The development is in solidarity with the Academic Staff Union of Universities (ASUU). Samson Ugwoke, president of SSANU, who is also the chairman of JAC made the declaration at a press conference in Abuja Wednesday evening.

5. Vice President, Yemi Osinbajo on Wednesday visited Benue over the flood that ravaged some parts of the state. Osinbajo visited the Tor Tiv, Ocivirigh James Ayatse, before visiting flood-affected areas and the Internally Displaced Persons camp. The VP praised Governor Ortom for providing a government that aims to unite Benue people.

6. The Police Service Commission on Wednesday confirmed that the retirement letter of Chairman Senate Committee on Navy, Isah Misau, is genuine. Head, Press and Public Relations of the Commission, Ikechukwu Ani, made the confirmation in Abuja. Ani said the retirement letter with Ref. No: PSC 1034 Vol.8/244 was issued on March 4, 2014, but took effect from December 1, 2010.

7. In sports, FIFA has ordered South Africa and Senegal to replay the 2018 World Cup qualifier they completed in November last year, after the referee was banned for life for “match manipulation”. Bafana Bafana, which played at home, won the match 2-1. But the result will not stand, after action taken against Ghanaian referee, Joseph Lamptey, was upheld by the Court of Arbitration for Sport (CAS).

8. One person has been reportedly killed as military men attached to Greenville Oil Company in Rumuji community, in the Emohua Local Government Area of Rivers State, attacked protesting residents. Some youths from Rumuji town had protested to the company against alleged neglect of the host community in the areas of employment and development. The soldiers guarding the firm consequently opened fire to acare them away. But bullets from the gunshots killed one and injured others.

9. The meeting between the Federal Government Negotiation Team and the striking National Association of Resident Doctors, NARD, ended in deadlock as the doctors have insisted that until they receive alerts of the unpaid salaries, they would not suspend the ongoing strike.

10. A video has emerged of the leader of the Indigenous People of Biafra, IPOB, Mazi Nnamdi Kanu, receiving some IPOB supporters who were released from alleged military detention after the unarmed youths clashed with the army in Umuahia, Abia state few days ago. The released supporters were with injuries on their faces.
