1. The Nigerian government has declared Monday, October 2nd, public holiday to mark the nation’s 57th Independence Anniversary.
Minister of Interior, Lt Gen. Abdulrahman Dambazau (Rtd), who made the declaration on behalf of the Federal Government, congratulated Nigerians on the anniversary and urged them to sustain the collective efforts towards maintaining and strengthening the unity of Nigeria
2. Nigerian government yesterday came hard on what it tagged the obsolete and old-fashioned composition of the UN Security Council, and described it as undemocratic.
The Permanent Representative of Nigeria to the UN, Prof. Tijjani Bande, told journalists in New York that there was an urgent need to reform the body, stressing that Nigeria and some countries, currently left out, ‘rightly’ deserved a permanent seat in the Council considering the current realities.
3. Senators from the South East have met with President Muhammadu Buhari over the tension generated in the region as a result of the activities of the Indigenous People of Biafra, IPOB.
The Senators, who were led by the Deputy Senate President, Senator Ike Ekweremadu said the South East zone was shortchanged by the current Federal Government.
4. Former Vice President, Atiku Abubakar, has distanced himself from a statement where he eulogized leader of the Indigenous People of Biafra (IPOB), Nnamdi Kanu, for placing the issue of restructuring on the front burner of national discourse.
Atiku described the report on the website of a reputable newspaper as “classical fake news.”
5. The Indigenous people of Biafra (IPOB) has asked President Muhammadu Buhari to explain what he did with its leader, Mazi Nnamdi Kanu, if he (Kanu) was no longer alive.
IPOB said it fears that its leader and his parents may have been harmed while in the custody of the Nigerian Army.
6. The federal Government on Wednesday pulled out from 90 international bodies so as to be able to meet up with its obligations,
The Minister of Finance, Mrs. Kemi Adeosun said the decision was reached during the just concluded Federal Executive Council, FEC, meeting.
7. Sokoto State Government has banned the Islamic Movement of Nigeria, (Shiite) from staging any public procession in the state.
Commissioner for Justice and Attorney General, Barr. Sulaiman Usman (SAN), who made this known in Sokoto, at a press conference, after a security meeting, Wednesday, said in view of anticipated insecurity in the state, the ban order became necessary.
8. Ijaw Leader, Chief Edwin Clark has declared that Nigeria must be restructured to boost economic growth and development.
Clark, a former national commissioner! who addressed the press in Abuja on Wednesday on the perceived lopsidedness in the federal government owned oil companies, said the country cannot continue as it is now.
9. The naira, yesterday, depreciated to N360 per dollar in the Nigerian Autonomous Foreign Exchange, NAFEX, just as the Central Bank of Nigeria, CBN plans to sell N130.4 billion treasury bills next month.
Data from the Financial Market Dealers Quote, FMDQ, yesterday, showed that the indicative Exchange Rate for the Investor and Export, (I & E) Window, known as Nigerian Autonomous Foreign Exchange, NAFEX, depreciated marginally by 11 kobo to N360 per dollar from N359.89 per dollar recorded on Wednesday, even as the volume of dollars traded remained unchanged at $250.29 million.
10. Chairman of South East Governors’ Forum and Governor of Ebonyi State, David Umahi, Wednesday, stated that the South-East governors have concluded arrangements to re-absorb, rehabilitate and empower youths who were misled by the agitation of the Indigenous People of Biafra, IPOB, in the country.
According to him, the proscription of IPOB has helped in saving the lives of over 12 million Igbos and foreigners across the country.
