Nigerian Newspapers: 10 things you need to know this Sunday morning

1. Officials of the Lagos State government have commenced demolition of structures in Obalende area of the state.

This was followed by last week’s notice to owners of properties erected on drainage channels to immediately vacate or risk being removed.

2. A former Deputy National Chairman of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), Chief Bode George, has begged the Governor of Ekiti State, Ayodele Fayose, to forgive former President Olusegun Obasanjo and move on.

He told Fayose that God had already fought for him, by allowing him to return as Governor of Ekiti eight years after his impeachment.

3. A chieftain of the All Progressives Congress in Delta State, Mr. Unoma Ashiedu, has been reportedly assassinated by unknown gunmen in Okpanam, near Asaba, the state capital.

The deceased, who is the Legal Adviser of the APC in Oshimili North, was reported to have been trailed by his killers to the spot where he was killed.

4. Some assassins have killed the traditional ruler of Owo town, in the Yewa South Local Government Area of Ogun State, Oba Patrick Fasinu.

He was said to have dropped off his driver along the way and was heading home in his Camry car when he was waylaid by the assailants.

5. The Vice Chancellor of the University of Maiduguri, Professor Ibrahim Njodi, has dismissed a report by the Nigerian Army that some members of staff of the institution who went on oil exploration with the NNPC team on July 25 were rescued.

Njodi said it was unfortunate that in the course of contributing to national development, nine staff of the university died in the process.

6. The leader of the Indigenous People of Biafra, Nnamdi Kanu, has vowed that his group will sack the All Progressives Congress-led government under the leadership of Rochas Okorocha of Imo State in 2019.

Kanu insisted that there would be no election in Anambra State in November and in the other four South-East states in 2019.

7. An Anambra High Court presided over by Justice Dennis Maduechesi has sacked Mr. Martin Agbaso as the national chairman of the All Progressives Grand Alliance.

Agbaso was declared the national chairman of the party through an order of mandamus granted by Justice A.R Ozoemena of the Enugu High Court on May 22.

8. President Robert Mugabe of Zimbabwe on Saturday said he was neither stepping down nor dying and that there was no one with his political stature who could immediately take over from him.

Mugabe told tens of thousands of supporters at a rally in the town of Chinhoyi, in his home province, that doctors were recently surprised by his “strong bone system.”

9. Major Hamza Al-Mustapha, (rtd.) the former Chief Security Officer to the late Head of State, General Sani Abacha, has said he is touring every part of the country to preach peace.

Al-Mustapha, who slammed Arewa Youths for giving Igbos in the North a three-month notice to leave, also blasted those supporting Nnamdi Kanu’s quest for Biafra.

10. The presidential panel led by Acting President Yemi Osinbajo, that investigated the suspended Secretary to the Government of the Federation, Babachir David Lawal and the Director-General of the National Intelligence Agency (NIA), Ayo Oke, has recommended that the duo be sacked.

Others members of the investigation panel are: the National Security Adviser, General Babagana Monguno (rtd) and the Attorney-General of the Federation, Abubakar Malami.
