Nigerian newspapers: 10 things you need to know this Sunday morning

Good morning! Here is today’s summary from Nigerian Newspapers:

1. The Catholic Archbishop of Abuja, His Eminence, John Cardinal Onaiyekan, on Saturday called on Fulani leaders to caution their people against violence before things get out of hand in the country. Onaiyekan, who made the call at a mass to celebrate his 50th Priestly Ordination Anniversary in Abuja, stressed that herdsmen should be worried at the rate they were being mentioned for something evil. He noted that at this rate, very soon, no place would be safe for Fulanis anymore because no one is safe at the moment because of Fulanis.

2. Atiku Abubakar, the 2019 Peoples Democratic Party, PDP, presidential candidate has joined other Nigerians in condemning the killing of a Catholic priest, Rev. Fr. Paul Offu by suspected herdsmen. Atiku said the death of Rev. Offu is a reminder that no one is immune from the ravaging epidemic.

3. Rivers State Governor, Nyesom Wike, has sacked the Vice-Chancellor of the Rivers State University, Prof Blessing Chimezie Didia, with immediate effect. Governor Wike also sacked the Deputy Vice-Chancellor (Administration) of RSU, Professor Magnus Oruwari. The Governor, therefore, approved the appointment of Professor Opuenebo B. Owei, Deputy Vice-Chancellor (Academics) as the Acting Vice-Chancellor of the Rivers State University, respectively.

4. The Senior Pastor of the Awaiting The Second Coming Of Jesus Christ Gospel Church, Pastor Adewale Giwa, has declared that Pastor Enoch Adeboye, General Overseer of the Redeemed Christian Church of God (RCCG) and Pastor Tunde Bakare of the Latter Rain Assembly were some of the persons who caused problems befalling Nigeria. He lamented that they were some of the respected clerics who backed President Muhammadu Buhari to emerge as the nation’s leader in 2015.

5. The Miyetti Allah Cattle Breeders Association of Nigeria (MACBAN), has said that Fulani herdsmen were not responsible for the killing of the Catholic priest of St James the Greater Parish, Ugbawka, Enugu State on Thursday. The group said it was part of security and peace committee in Enugu State, hence, it was bound to control its members and ensures that criminals do not infiltrate its members conducting their business of cow rearing. Chairman of MACBAN in South East, Alhaji Giddado Siddiki, said this in a statement on Saturday.

6. President Muhammadu Buhari has sent a condolence message to the Catholic Church over the killing of Rev. Fr. Paul Offu, the Priest of St. James Greater Parish Catholic Church, Ugbawka, Enugu State by suspected herdsmen. A statement on Saturday by Garba Shehu, said that President Buhari expressed deep shock and dismay over the killing of another priest, ordering a thorough manhunt for the killers and their immediate prosecution.

7. Amnesty International, a global human rights organization, has called for the immediate release of AAC presidential candidate and publisher of Sahara Reporters, Omoyele Sowore. The body advised the authorities to release Sowore immediately if he has not been charged for any offence as his right must be respected.

8. The Ogun State Police Command on Saturday said the remaining four persons abducted alongside RCCG deaconess, Mrs Ibelegbo Chidinma, have been rescued. The Police Public Relations Officer in the state, Abimbola Oyeyemi, confirmed the development on Saturday afternoon. Oyeyemi added that the victims were rescued unhurt.

9. The authorities of Obafemi Awolowo University (OAU), on Saturday, confirmed the death of one of her own due to poor academic performance. The deceased, Opeyemi Dara, who was a final year student of the Faculty of Arts, Department of English Language, allegedly committed suicide after taking a suspected dose of lethal substance popularly known as “snipper”. Report claims she allegedly took her life following her poor academic performance.

10. Deaconess Ibelegbo Chidinma, one of the RCCG Pastors who was abducted and rescued on Saturday has recounted her experience in the hands of kidnappers, alleging that their abductors were Fulani herdsmen. She said she escaped after she prayed and put the kidnappers to sleep.
