Nigerian Newspapers: 10 things you need to know this Sunday morning

1. No fewer than three persons were yesterday reportedly killed as traders and youths of Ekeukwu market in Owerri, the Imo State capital clashed with security operatives over directives given by the state government on the relocation of the market.

The incident occurred Saturday morning when the state government moved in to start the demolition of the market which is to be effected by security operatives. The clash became heavy as gunshots were heard by residents in the neighborhood.

2. Emeka Ojukwu Jr., a legal practitioner and son of Igbo leader, Chukwuemeka Odumegwu Ojukwu, has said that the only thing he holds against Nnamdi Kanu’s agitation for the actualization of Biafra, is “their methodology”.

He admitted that the agitation by the Indigenous People of Biafra (IPOB) led by Kanu and The Movement for the Actualisation of the Sovereign State of Biafra (MASSOB), was “valid”.

3. No fewer than seven persons have been declared missing with several others sustaining injuries in a boat mishap in Ugborodo community in Warri South-West Local Government Area of Delta State.

An official report by the Police says it was a boat mishap, stressing that it has nothing to do with attacks by the groups involved in factional leadership tussle in the community.

4. Former President, Olusegun Obasanjo has explained why he is opposed to those who are advocating for the restructuring of the country.

Obasanjo said instead of fighting for restructuring, people should be concerned about inclusiveness and the restructuring of their minds.

5. The President of the Igbo apex socio-political organisation, Ohanaeze Ndigbo, Chief John Nwodo, yesterday rejected the planned re-arrest of the leader of the Indigenous Peoples of Biafra (IPOB), Nnamdi Kanu, by the federal government.

He said Kanu was free as a citizen to hold any point of view no matter how displeasing to anyone, as long as such a view is not inciting or provoking any criminal activities.

6. The Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) has frozen over N8, 627,458,773.36 billion in three accounts of Hajiya Muinat Bola Shagaya, an associate and friend of a former First Lady, Mrs. Patience Jonathan.

Shagaya’s relationship with about 10 firms/account names are also being investigated by the anti-graft agency.

7. The Northern Elders Forum (NEF) is not happy with the federal government for its alleged silence on intermittent clashes between herdsmen and farmers in different parts of the country.

It blamed the federal government for failing to evolve a nationwide transition programme for herdsmen to embrace ranching as a solution to the persistent clashes.

8. The Academic Staff Union of Universities (ASUU) will hold a meeting this weekend, to decide on the offers made by the Federal Government last week, to persuade its striking members to return to work.

The union said many of its members were not happy with the way government is handling our demands.

9. Still on ASUU, the Pro-Chancellor and Chairman of the Governing Council of Ladoke Akintola University of Technology, (LAUTECH) Ogbomoso, Prof. Oladapo Afolabi, has assured that the industrial action by the workers of the institution would end in matter of days.

He disclosed that the Governing Council was making serious efforts to find a lasting solution to the challenges facing LAUTECH.

10. Floyd Mayweather floored Conor McGregor with a 10th-round stoppage on Saturday to win their money-spinning superfight and clinch his 50th straight victory.

Former welterweight boxing champion, Mayweather, who had emerged from a two-year retirement to take on the Irish mixed martial arts star, took his time to get going before dominating from the fourth round.
